Toyota stirred up a lot of interest on social media in a mysterious huge egg trekking across America on its way across America to the New York International Auto Show last week. Arriving just before the start of the show, Toyota cracked the egg open revealing the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback making its national public debut at the big show in the Big Apple.
According to Toyota, the completely reimagined Corolla Hatchback is the most technologically-advanced vehicle in its segment – featuring new styling, new materials and advanced innovation inside and out.
Arriving in Summer 2018, the new 2019 Corolla Hatchback will come in just two well-equipped trim levels – SE and XSE. Replacing the Corolla iM inherited from the Scion brand, the all-new 2019 Corolla Hatchback gives Toyota the freshest entry in the very competitive small car ‘hatch’ segment.
A lot of the detail on performance attributes and pricing will not be available until closer to launch – but here is what we do know.
Built on the new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-C) platform, the 2019 Corolla ‘Hatch’ is lower, wider and longer overall and has wider front and rear tracks plus a longer wheelbase compared to the iM. The hood is two-inches lower and the front overhang is shorter with a longer overhang at the rear. With the dimensional changes, the more rounded nose and rear styling give it a more muscular look.
A lighter restyled hatch – constructed of Toyota Super Olefin Polymer (TSOP) and ABS – is set at a steeper angle, 14 degrees forward, giving a sporty accent to the muscular look.
The powertrain on the 2019 Corolla Hatchback features an all-new TNGA 2.0L Dynamic-Force direct injection inline four-cylinder engine that is lighter and physically smaller but more powerful and efficient than the 1.8L it replaces, according to Toyota.
The ‘Hatch’ will offer two transmissions. An all-new Dynamic-Shift CVT transmission simulates 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps, has a Sport Mode and Paddle Shifters PLUS a Launch Gear, the first ever in a passenger vehicle CVT.
For the driver who wants more performance control, there is an all-new 6-speed iMT (intelligent) manual transmission with downshift rev-matching control.
Enhanced Performance Platform
The new and innovative powertrains will combine with the lighter and quieter chassis and body of the stronger TNGA-C platform to deliver improved performance and a more exciting drive experience for driver and passengers.
Revised suspensions include new MacPherson strut setups, updated coil spring rates and damping forces at the front and a modified structure multi-link suspension with stabilizer bar including updated shock absorbers and spring – at the rear.
Also contributing to making the Corolla ‘Hatch’ a sportier plus quieter drive experience is the use of aluminum and high- and ultra-high strength tensile steel anchored by advanced adhesives, spot welding and targeted bracing for improved torsional rigidity. The extensive use of sound absorbing materials, sealants, foams and silencers throughout the chassis and cab add to making the sportier ride even quieter.
Inside the Corolla ‘Hatch’ has been recrafted and enhanced for driver performance and passenger comfort with simple – yet functional – convenience for both.
Some of the enhancements include supportive sport seating up front, a wider front console featuring an 8-inch multi-media touchscreen and a Qi wireless charging tray for smartphone. Rear seat cushioning is enhanced for increased comfort. Doors up front can hold up to 24-ounce bottles with rear cupholders able to hold 16-ounce bottles.
The use of premium-look materials is extensive and feature high-gloss paired with matte elements – silver accents, Piano Black and available contrast stitching all around the cabin.
Both SE and XSE feature J-Shaped Bi-Beam LED headlamps, LED Taillights, chrome exhaust diffuser and alloy wheels. Wheels on the SE are 16 or 17-inch with 18-inch wheels on the XSE. XSE adds LED Fog Lights and chrome grille surround.
An available Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) focuses the light, matching vehicle speed and steering angle, by adjusting the Bi-Beam LED units vertically, horizontally and factored for the longitudinal axis – in the direction the vehicle is going.
Standard by Trim
Standard on the SE are single-zone climate control, leather shift knob, paddle shifters, electronic parking brake, SmartKey system, two front USB outlets and Entune 3.0 Audio with 8-inch touchscreen and six speakers. The Entune 3.0 App Suite features Apple CarPlay. Amazon Alexa, WiFi Connect, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth hands free and streaming plus weather/traffic and more.
The XSE adds dual-zone climate control, leather/fabric seating, heated front seats, 8-way power driver, accent stitching and a 7-inch TFT Multi-Information Display that includes vehicle data and turn-by-turn navigation.
Media is stepped up in the XSE with Entune 3.0 Plus with HD and SiriusXM radio and more. The system includes a JBL 8-speaker 800-Watt System with Clari-Fi, A-pillar horn tweeters, 6.7-inch door subwoofers and Wide Dispersion Midrange Speakers.
Enhanced Safety Technology
The new Corolla Hatchback will come standard with the first application of the enhanced second- generation Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0) system.
Totally new is Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) for highway and freeway driving. Enabled by the Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), it uses the white or yellow lane markings or the path of the preceding vehicle, to actively track to the center of the lane.
Other features of TSS 2.0 include:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD has added nighttime pedestrian and daytime bicyclist detection features to alert drivers and apply brakes when necessary to avert collisions.
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) has been enhanced to detect the edge of the road along with lane markers to assist in maintaining vehicle lane position.
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (Full-Speed DRCC) adaptive cruise control now features enhanced speed, cut-in and distance control and now includes Turn Signal Link control.
- Automatic High Beam Control (AHB)
Equipped with backup camera, the Corolla Hatchback has seven standard air bags and Toyota’s Star Safety System with enhanced features – Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Anti-lock Brakes, Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology. A Blind Spot Monitor is standard on XSE and available on SE.
