GMC Sierra Denali and SLT taller, bolder with more innovation for 2019

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ border_style=”solid”]

GMC invited a select group of automotive media (including inwheeltime.com) to Detroit this week for a first look at their new 2019 GMC Sierra Denali and SLT top-of-the-line trucks.

Now in its fourth generation, the 2019 Sierra is taller, bolder and bigger with more features and technology than ever before – making it pretty much best in every category of the premium pickup truck segment – according to presenting GMC executives.  Our first look is maybe not ‘every’, but certainly many of them.

During the presentation, GMC officials called attention to several of the new and or improved features of the new Sierra Denali and SLT models shown that distinguish it from the sibling Chevrolet Silverado and/or the competition.

A couple of them we see as seriously innovative and clearly single out the new Sierra Denali and SLT from the competition.

Industry First MultiPro Tailgate

Standard on Denali and SLT models is a new six-function tailgate offering new convenience and versatility for the pickup truck that is awesomely practical and efficient.

Beyond simple open and close, the new gate is easily configured to allow second tier loading, provide a cargo stop barrier, when the gate down, to accommodate longer loads plus a drop-down gate to allow easy reach-in to loads in the box.  A further drop position creates a stair step (with safety handle) or forms a seat while yet another position creates a stand-up work table for a computer, laying out plans and drawings or serving food and refreshments.  And, just inside the bed, is 110-volt connectivity to power a computer or other devices as desired.

We did note that the sibling Silverado offers a power tailgate which we did not see included here.  If GMC could add that feature – this tailgate would be even more awesome.

Watch a video on the tailgate here: http://media.gmc.com/media/us/en/gmc/vehicles/sierra/2019.html

CarbonPro Carbon Fiber Cargo Box

Coming soon after launch, the Sierra Denali will offer an industry -first carbon fiber composite cargo box with the most durability against dent, scratch and corrosion of any box in the segment. In addition to being stronger, it is also 62 pounds lighter than the standard steel box in Sierra.  Our take is that this option could be pricy, but the durability may well be more than worth it.

ProGrade Trailering System with App

Standard on Denali and SLT, complete with app for smart phones, it enables and manages a Pre-Departure Checklist, Maintenance List, Trailer Light Test, Trailer Electrical Diagnostics and Tire Pressure and Heat Monitoring.

Additionally, Sierra offers a Hitch View and Guidance feature for perfect positioning when hitching, side cameras and trailer mounted camera for added visibility when driving or backing up and a Theft Alert system that detects and alerts owner smartphones if the trailer has been unhitched without permission.

Other distinguishing features we noted include:

Powertrains et al

Denali and SLT will use updated versions of their 6.2L and 5.3L V8 engines. An all-new 3.0L in-line-six turbo diesel will also be available. The 6.2L and the diesel will be mated to the new 10-speed automatic transmission with the 5.3L mated to an 8-speed. The V8’s feature Stop/Start along with Cylinder Deactivation (to a single cylinder) technology to improve fuel economy.

The Denali will be equipped with an exclusive Adaptive Ride Control suspension said to be an improved Magnetic Ride Control system.

No pricing or performance information was available at this special media reveal.  As usual, expect that closer to launch – scheduled for Fall 2018.

GMC executives indicated the first public appearance of the new 2019 GMC Sierra SLT and Denali would be at the New York International Auto Show in April (March 30 to April 8).  Additional information on the Sierra is expected to be announced at that show.  The full line-up will include eight trim levels and six powertrain combinations we were told.  We ‘suspect’ we will hear more about powertrains in New York.
