2019 Ram Laramie Longhorn powered by HEMI eTorque leads luxury truck segment again

Already considered by many to be the full-size truck segment luxury truck leader, the Ram team has raised the bar measurably (again) for 2019 with their latest Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4×4 powered by the 5.7L HEMI with new fuel saving eTorque technology.

We recently previewed the new Laramie Longhorn with Ram engineers and then spent a week driving a brand new 2019 Ram 1500 Longhorn Crew Cab 4×4 with eTorque in and around Austin, Texas.

Having test driven every Ram Laramie Longhorn 5.7L HEMI for the last several years, we think we are qualified to say this one is the best yet.  Under the hood, around the exterior or inside the cabin, the 2019 Laramie Longhorn 4×4 with eTorque excels – again.

2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4×4 eTorque

The test Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4×4 that Ram loaned us for the week came in rich Rugged Brown Pearlcoat with a Mountain Brown/Light Brown Southwestern themed interior that included Premium Filigree Leather Seating, alligator skin embossed surfaces, handcrafted wooden accents, Laramie signature themed detailing and more.

It was equipped with the new (optional) 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque power plant delivering 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque mated to their 8HP5 eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard was the BW48-11 On-Demand electric two-speed transfer case and 3.21 ratio differential with the optional Anti-Spin rear axle.  Running gear on the ground was a set of 275/55R50 all-season tires mounted on alloy wheels.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”http://ticket-1994427.inwheeltime.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/20180912_105413.jpg” alt=”2019 Ram Laramie Longhorn” title_text=”2019 Ram Laramie Longhorn” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.23″ animation_style=”fade” animation_duration=”500ms” border_style=”solid” animation=”fade_in” sticky=”off” always_center_on_mobile=”on”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ border_style=”solid”]

Fuel economy ratings for our 5.7L HEMI 4×4 eTorque test truck were 17/22 mpg city/highway and 19 combined – an increase of 2 mpg (11.7 percent) over the HEMI without eTorque.

Underneath is a new front independent suspension system with their exclusive five-link coil suspension at the rear.  Both front and rear suspensions feature new Frequency Response Damping shocks for control and improved ride.

Not present on our test truck was the Ram Four Corner Air Suspension system which offers five ride levels and load-leveling capability to optimize handling when hauling or towing.  Optional at $1,795, we would have added it to this truck.

Other than the above, our test truck was an excellent mix of both standard and optional features that appeal to discriminating buyers wanting premium features in a luxury truck.

Exterior

Some of the notable functional exterior features included the new chiseled Ram’s Head badging, Chrome Slat Grille with bold R-A-M lettering, aluminum Raised Hood, Chrome Bumpers and Tow Hooks, Panoramic (10 square foot) Dual Pane SunRoof, Bi-Function LED Projector Headlamps with Automatic High Beam Control, LED Fog and Tail Lamps, Wheel-to-Wheel Powered Side-Steps, Rain-Sensitive Wipers, and more.

The cargo bed included an Aluminum Dampened Tailgate with Remote Release, Bed Utility Tie Down System, Spray-in Bedliner, Class IV Receive-Hitch with 7-Pin Wiring Harness, Trailer Brake Control and a Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover.

We would note here that the tow capacity of our test truck was 8,090 pounds. If you need more, upgrading to a 3.92 rear end and a couple other changes would increase tow to 11,190 pounds.

Interior

The cabin of the 2019 Laramie Longhorn is huge and features premium materials and leather surfaces with metal and wood accents in Southwestern themes.  Surrounded by a comprehensive array of technology and convenience features, the cabin of the Laramie Longhorn is the luxury limo of pickup trucks.

We are impressed with the new large center console with its 12 storage configurations (we think we found them all). Highlights include the ample 3-position sliding cupholders, configurable deep storage tub that can hold a 15-inch laptop and the smartphone wireless charging slot.

Also impressing us was the new ‘driver one hand’ control cluster that includes the Push-Button Start, Rotary Shifter, Electronic Parking Brake, Stop/Start Cancellation, Hill-Descent Control, Axle Lock and Transfer Case Controls – all under one hand.  We also like the dual glove box with the smaller unit above and larger below.

The near 4-inch longer cabin gives more legroom up front and lots more room in the back seat.  So much so that, with the sliding recline feature, one might think they are seated in the latest of movie venues equipped with lounge chairs. With the ample fold-down console and leather seat surfaces that are both heated and ventilated – one could easily nod off on a long ride.

When needed as cargo space, the rear seats fold up providing the largest flat floor space in the segment. It comes to mind that – in a pinch – an air mattress and sleeping bag could fit nicely on the floor as well.

And for that small stuff or maybe perishables, there are large RamBins in the floor on each side for such items.

Infotainment and Technology

Technology in the cabin is highlighted by the latest generation Uconnect 4C w/ NAV system and the new 12-inch Configurable Touchscreen (with split screen) Display.  Nearly ‘surround sound’ audio is provided by the Harman Kardon 12-channel 19-speaker Premium Sound with Active Noise Cancellation system.  Also included is the new SiriusXM with 360L allowing on demand personalization of programming.

A word about eTorque

Keeping it simple, the new Ram engine technology – known as eTorque – adds measurable fuel efficiency and enhances the performance of the automatic transmission in 2019 Ram 1500 trucks so equipped.

When equipped with eTorque, a 48-volt motor-generator system replaces the traditional alternator.  When operating, it delivers electric torque to the engine at low RPM, such as spooling up the engine during start-up and smooths automatic gear shifting in the lower ranges which improves the fuel economy of the powertrain.

Power produced by the motor-generator, not immediately used, is converted to 12V and stored in a small lithium battery pack mounted behind the rear seat.  Regenerative braking also adds to the battery charge in normal driving.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”http://ticket-1994427.inwheeltime.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/20180912_150625.jpg” alt=”2019 Ram Laramie Longhorn” title_text=”2019 Ram Laramie Longhorn” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.23″ animation_style=”fade” animation_duration=”500ms” border_style=”solid” animation=”fade_in” sticky=”off” always_center_on_mobile=”on”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ border_style=”solid”]

In addition to augmenting the gasoline engine when starting up and accelerating, the system also provides power to various engine accessories – leaving more engine power for moving the truck.

The eTorque system does not add horsepower or tow/haul capacity to the truck.

What it does do is enable more effective use of engine generated power by supplementing it with electric power at certain times to improve the fuel efficiency of the power train.
