Toyota Yaris Sedan gets new name and three trim levels for 2019
Toyota is debuting the 2019 Yaris Sedan at the New York Auto Show this week. For 2019, the Yaris sedan drops the Yaris iA moniker for the sedan and adds additional trims and more features for their entry level sub-compact sedan.
Going on sale in Fall 2018, the front-wheel drive Yaris Sedan will come in three trim levels, what they call the ‘sporty’ L, a well-equipped LE and a premium XLE.

We are very familiar with the Yaris iA and participating in its original launch and evaluation as the Scion iA. When the Scion brand was shut down, Toyota, needing an entry-level subcompact sedan, rebranded it (in 2016) as the Yaris iA.
What impressed us about it were the simple styling, excellent driving characteristics (both automatic and manual shift), nice balance of power and weight, great fuel economy, nice assortment of features, roomy and comfortable cabin and price. As a single trim level, equipped with the automatic transmission upgrade and accessories, you could drive it home for right around $18,000. We called it the best value entry level sub-compact in the market – period.
Pricing for the 2019 Yaris Sedan will not be available until closer to launch. It will be important.

A review of the debut announcement, tells us that all of the basics of the 2019 Yaris Sedan are pretty much the same as prior year Yaris iA with just a few features added across the line or upgraded in the new LE and XLE trims.
For the Yaris to continue to be a desirable value-priced sedan for entry level buyers, they will need to bring it in – delivered – from around $18,000 (L) to $20,000 (XLE).

What’s New
For 2019, all Yaris sedans will feature a new ‘sport-inspired’ front grille with a honeycomb insert design. Exterior styling cues include upscale piano black accents and chrome trim. Every grade is fitted with a roof-mounted, color-keyed shark fin antenna for the available satellite radio.
Power outside mirrors come standard on the L, while the LE and XLE are equipped with power outside heated mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators. Fog lights and a new rear lip spoiler come standard on the LE and XLE grades. The LE and XLE also feature unique 16-inch alloy wheels with new dark gunmetal finish.

The XLE gets more of a premium look with sporty leatherette-trimmed front seats, leather- trimmed steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake, an HVAC system with Automatic Climate Control, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and illuminated entry.
Push button start is standard on all grades, with the L grade featuring remote keyless entry and both the LE and XLE equipped with Smart Key System.

The Rest
The Yaris Sedan powertrain uses a direct-injection 1.5L engine producing 106 horsepower with 103 lb.-ft. of torque. There are two transmissions. Standard is a 6-speed manual gearbox with a short throw for quick shifting – which we have praised in drives of the previous models. Available also is a 6-speed automatic that – also from prior experience – is nicely integrated with the powerplant for optimal performance. A Sport Mode gives it a nice bit of additional pep.
Fuel economy ratings are 30/39 mpg city/highway and 34 mpg combined for the manual and 32/40 mpg city/highway and 35 combined for the automatic.
To deliver crisp handling, the 2019 Yaris Sedan is built with high-tensile steel, body and frame. It has a Sport-tuned Electric Power rack and pinion steering system and is equipped with McPherson Struts and Springs front and Torsion Beam suspension rear. Brakes are ventilated disc front and drum rear tuned for graduated brake force when cornering.

Inside the 2019 Yaris Sedan you find a stylish instrumentation cluster that includes an analog speedometer, digital tachometer and incorporated trip meter. In the center of the dash is a bright 7.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system with voice recognition, remote interface, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth connectivity and backup camera display. Audio in the cabin is a six-speaker sound system with SiriusXM satellite radio available. An integrated AM/FM antenna, auxiliary audio jack and USB port with iPod connectivity are standard.

Every Yaris Sedan is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System an an Active Safety System that includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and a Brake Over-Ride System (BOS).

The Yaris Sedan is also fitted with a Low-Speed Pre-Collision System, which scans the road ahead for potential vehicle collisions. If the system detects a potential frontal collision, an audio/visual alert and braking assistance are designed to automatically activate and, if the driver does not respond, the system may automatically apply the brakes.
