2020 Hyundai Santa Fe repackaged delivers more performance and value

2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited 2.0T FWD in Quartz White

The popular Hyundai Santa Fe mid-size SUV for 2020 has been – as they call it – repackaged for increased customer choice and value.

We would say it has been refocused, becoming even more competitive in the hot mid-size SUV segment – offering a simpler lineup with more content and value for the consumer at each trim level.

The top-of-the-line 2020 Santa Fe Limited best represents their effort to deliver a premium ride and drive experience – complete with lots of technology, comfort, convenience and room in a mid-size SUV.

Just before Christmas, Hyundai loaned us a 2020 Santa Fe Limited 2.0T FWD for a week-long test drive in Hill Country, Texas.

We found our Santa Fe to be an excellent driver, nimble and quick and well balanced – sporting new technology and awesome audio in a premium cabin for a competitive price.

Had we a large red bow, we would have put this Santa Fe under our tree for Christmas.

2020 Santa Fe Limited 2.0T FWD as tested

The Santa Fe Limited comes complete with all features and amenities included in its MSRP.  All you have to decide is – which engine do you want and do you want FWD or AWD? The rest is already there.

Our test 2020 Santa Fe Limited FWD 2.0T Turbo was in a bright Quartz White with a handsome Espresso/Gray interior.  The MSRP for our test Limited was $37,500.

A very short list of accessories is available like the Carpeted Floor Mats which were on our test vehicle.  With delivery and those floor mats, this 2020 Santa Fe Limited 2.0T FWD was in our garage for $38,730.

During our week with the Limited, we were not surprised to confirm that it is a whole lot of mid-size two-row SUV for the price.

AWD is Available

The FWD model drove and handled very well for us in the varying terrain of Texas Hill Country.

However, if you drive in more inclement weather environments, we recommend opting for Santa Fe equipped with HTRAC – their AWD system which controls engine power, torque and braking individually at each wheel for optimal road-handling.

Adding HTRAC ($1,700) would have increased our Santa Fe delivered price to $40,430 – still a great value.

Powertrain and Mechanical

Our Limited FWD was equipped with a powerful 2.0L Inline 4-cylinder Turbo that produces 225 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with a robust 269 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,450-3,500 rpm.

The engine is well integrated with an Auto Stop/Start which operated so seamlessly that we had to focus in order to detect it.

A wide-range 8-speed automatic transmission – with Shiftmatic – delivers the power to the front-wheel drive system.  It features driver selectable Drive Modes (Normal, Sport and Smart).

The integration of this power plant and transmission with Drive Modes delivers excellent acceleration with plenty of performance to spare at highway speed.

Fuel economy is rated at 20/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined which is on par with competition. But, for a 3,900-pound vehicle, we would have expected a couple mpg better than that with this turbo engine.

Ride and handling were smooth and planted. Underneath, Santa Fe rides on MacPherson struts and gas-filled dampers front and a Multi-link w/gas-filled dampers rear.

Santa Fe Limited runs on 19-inch alloy wheels mounted with 235/55R19 all-season tires

Equipped with an 18.8-gallon fuel tank, highway range for this Santa Fe is just over 500 miles.

Santa Fe Tows too

Santa Fe Limited with the 2.0L Turbo comes equipped with a trailering package.  It is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds towing a trailer equipped with brakes.  If the trailer does not have brakes, the capacity is limited to 1,650 pounds.

The 2020 Santa Fe is nicely styled and looks good coming, going or standing still.

Distinctive style and function elements on the Limited include Dark Chrome exterior trim including grille, and door handles, LED exterior lighting (Daytime Driving Lights, Headlights, Fog Lights and Tail Lights) and Automatic Headlamps with High Beam Assist.

Other elements included Door Handle Welcome lamps, Hands-free Liftgate w/Auto Open, Panoramic Power Sunroof and Roof Side Rails, Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Turn Signal Indicators and Rain Sensing Intermittent Windshield Wipers.

The large and handsome cabin of the 2020 Santa Fe Limited is full of features and function.

Both front and second row seating is generous and comfortable.  Seating is leather trimmed with front seats heated and ventilated with rear seats heated.  Up front the driver and passenger seats are 8-way power adjustable.  The rear seating is 60/40 split folding and include a recline feature.

A bonus is the thigh extender in the Driver Seat that makes long drives much more comfortable for us taller/bigger folks.

Other elements to note include the Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control with Ionizer, Manual Second Row Sunshades, LED Interior Lighting and the Leather-wrapped Heated Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel with vehicle controls.

Cargo space is very generous in the Santa Fe with 35.9 cubic feet behind the second row and – with the second row folded down – space increases to 71.3 cubic feet.

Plus, there is a large under cargo floor bin for even more stuff.

Technology and Driver Assistance Features

The 2020 Santa Fe Limited features a full-color Heads-Up Display with 8.5-inch image projection on the windshield for driver information and assistance.

The 8-inch Centerstack Touchscreen with integrated Navigation is well positioned for easy viewing by the driver.

Other convenience features include the 7-inch TFT LCD driver information display in the instrument panel, Rear View Monitor w/Parking Guidance, Remote Keyless Entry, Push Button Start, Qi Wireless Charging and Surround-View Camera System.

Santa Fe also features Hyundai’s Blue Link Connected Car system with enhanced safety, diagnostic, remote and voice guidance services available.

The 2020 Santa Fe Limited comes with the primo Infinity 630-watt, 12-speaker audio system with 11-channel amp, Clarifi and QuantumLogic Surround Sound Technology and Smart Speed-Dependent Volume Control.

Audio elements of note included Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, SiriusXM, AM/FM/HD Radio, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System and Dual Front and Rear USB connections and 12V and 115V Power Outlets.

A very complete array of safety features come on the Santa Fe Limited.

They include the newly developed Blind View Monitor for side views when the turn signals are activated.

Also included are Safe Exit Assist, Ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist w/Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance.

Other features include Smart Cruise Control w/Stop & Go, Lane Keeping Assist, Vehicle Stability Management, Electronic Stability Control w/Traction Control and Brake Assist, Individual Tire-Pressure Monitoring, Electronic Parking Brake, Hill Start Assist and – one of our favorites – Driver Attention (or lack of) Warning.

PLUS – The 2020 Santa Fe Limited is named by IIHS a 2020 Top Safety Pick+, their highest rating for safety.

Hyundai Warranty

Hyundai offers the best warranty in the segment.  All 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe models are covered by a 5-Year/60,000-Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, a 10-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty plus 5-Year/ Unlimited Miles 24-hour Roadside Assistance.

2020 Santa Fe Lineup

The Santa Fe lineup for 2020 is simple and straight forward – we call it ‘one and done’ – with only a couple of packages and a few select accessories to choose from.

There are just three trim levels SE, SEL and Limited.  There are two engine choices (2.4L I4 and 2.0L Turbo) for SEL and Limited.  The SE comes standard with the 2.4L only.  All trims come FWD standard with AWD optional.
