2020 Mazda6 Signature in Machine Gray Metallic

The 2020 Mazda6 is a beautifully crafted, sharply engineered nicely-priced mid-size sedan.

Mazda recently loaned us a top-of-the-line Mazda6 Signature in a handsome Machine Gray Metallic.  Low and sleek with subtle coupe-like styling and rolling on 19-inch Brilliant Silver Finish alloy wheels – the Mazda6 looks like it is moving while standing still.

Inside the nicely appointed spacious Parchment cabin we found Nappa leather sport seating, Japanese Sen Wood and Ultrasuede accented by Piano Black and Satin Chrome highlights.

Following a week of everyday and short trip driving in and around Central Texas, we came away pretty impressed with this latest drive from Mazda.

How Much?

Our 2020 Mazda6 Signature test vehicle had a MSRP of $35,300.  Adding a couple of accessories and delivery, our Mazda6 drove into our garage for $36,620.

Powertrain

The Signature level Mazda6 sport sedan is powered the Skyactiv-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.  It delivers 250 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque through a front-wheel-drive Skyactiv-Drive, 6-speed automatic transmission with column-mounted Paddle Shifters, Manual Shift and Sport Mode.

NOTE:  The turbocharged engine requires 93 octane fuel to generate 250 horsepower.  Using 87 octane fuel, the output is 227 horsepower.

Weighing in at just 3,580 pounds (curb weight), the turbo power plant – using 93 octane fuel and set in Sport Mode – delivers a credible sporty drive experience around town and on the highway.

Mechanical

The 2020 Mazda6 is a smooth and comfortable ride with good handling and braking.

It features an Independent MacPherson Strut Coil Spring Front and Multi-Link Coil Spring Rear Suspension w/Stabilizer Bars and Twin-Tube Shocks.

Steering is Electric Power Assisted Rack and Pinion w/engine speed sensing assist.

Braking is provided by ABS 4-wheel Single Piston Caliper Ventilated Disc Brakes w/Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist and an Electronic Parking Brake

Getting the ‘rubber on the road’ for Signature are 19-inch Alloy Wheels mounted w/225/45R19 all-season tires.

NOTE: The Mazda6 Signature is equipped with the Mazda Second Generation G-Vectoring Control Plus augmented by Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control and Hill Launch Assist w/Auto Hold.

Exterior

Visually, the 2020 Mazda6 Signature presents a handsome coupe-styled low and sleek profile. that says sport sedan.

Running on 19-inch wheels with a 57.1-inches of height and wheelbase of 111.4-inches and a real spoiler its profile strongly suggests sports sedan.

Our Machine Gray Metallic Mazda6 featured the Signature Gunmetal Front Grille, Body Color Front and Rear Bumpers and Door Handles, Bright Front Lower Molding, LED Headlamps, Daytime Running Lights and Combination Rear Lamps and Automatic Power Folding Heated Side Mirrors.

Also included was a Power Moonroof w/Interior Sunshade.

Interior

The interior of the Signature level Mazda6 is seriously premium both in design and in materials.  Our Parchment equipped Signature model really showed it off well. Seating is well engineered and nicely styled.  Up front are Nappa Leather-Trimmed Heated and Ventilated Reclining Sport Seats.  Front seating is 8-way Power Driver and 6-way Power Passenger.

Rear seating is heated 60/40 fold-down w/Center Armrest, Cupholders, Storage and USB Charging Points.

Featuring a Black Headliner, styling and accent materials included a Japanese Sen Wood, Gilded Ultrasuede and Piano Black surface coverings plus Satin Chrome and Leatherette treatments

NOTE:  A favorite feature are the Passenger Assist Grips at all doors.  .

Of note is the excellent interior lighting featuring direct cabin LED and Ambient Door Pockets and Front and Rear Footwells light sources.

NOT-SO-GOOD NOTE:  Headroom front/rear is a meager 37.4 and 37.1-inches, respectively.  That translates also to smaller door openings which makes access at the front tight – difficult at the rear – for taller and bigger persons.

Technology / Infotainment

Technology and infotainment in the Signature is relatively complete, though it does lack a Wi-Fi Hotspot which we would expect from the premium trim level of a mid-size sedan.

Mazda Connect Infotainment System w/Mazda Navigation anchors both technology and infotainment.  The system is managed through the Multi-Function Control on the console and the 8-inch full-color touchscreen in the center stack.

Entertainment is delivered through a Bose 11-speaker Audio System w/Centerpoint and AudioPilot.  Features include Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone and Audio, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration, AM/FM/HD/ AUX and SiriusXM w/Traffic and Travel Link.

Vehicle information is available on a 7-inch TFT LCD Multi-Information Display in the instrument cluster.

Mazda6 Signature is also equipped with a full-color Active Driving (head-up) Display w/Traffic Sign Recognition to enhance driving, vehicle and entertainment convnenience.

Other elements include Remote Keyless Entry, Push Button Start, 12V Power Point and USB input and charge points.

Safety

The 2020 Mazda6 is rated a Top Safety Pick + by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – their highest available rating.

“Plus’ rating earned from Adaptive LED Projector Headlamps

Elements of the i-Activsense safety package include: Mazda Radar Cruise Control w/Stop & Go, Advanced Smart City Brake Support wPedestrian Detection and Collision Warning, Adaptive Auto-Leveling LED Projector Headlamps w/High Beam Control,  Lane Departure Warning w/Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, 360 degree Surround View, Parking Sensors Front and Rear, Tire Pressure Monitoring  and Rear Camera.

All Mazda6 vehicles are covered by a 36-month/36,000-mile ‘bumper to bumper’ and 60-month/ 60,000-mile Powertrain Warranty
