“Twist” in just announced pricing makes 2020 Frontier a very attractive value
The 2020 Nissan Frontier mid-size truck gives us a glimpse of the next generation Frontier due in 2021.
In contrast to a normal exit of one generation so as not to steal thunder from the next, Nissan has chosen to power the departing truck with the heart of next generation 2021 truck.
The 2020 Frontier features an all-new and more powerful 3.8-liter direct injection V6 engine mated to an (also) all-new 9-speed automatic transmission. Nissan tells us both will be key elements in the next-generation Frontier.
The Frontier lineup for 2020 offers S, SV and PRO 4X models in King and Crew Cab, 4×2 and 4×4 configurations plus short wheel base (SWB) and long wheel base (LWB) versions in the SV model.
Just announced pricing for the 2020 Frontier appears very competitive with a nice ‘twist’ in packaging combinations on the SV model making it an extra attractive value.
Here is a look.
The All-new Powertrain
Giving us an advanced peek at the heart of the next generation Frontier, an all-new direct injection V6 engine mated to an (also) all-new 9-speed automatic transmission forms the standard powertrain for the 2020 Frontier.
Delivering 310 horsepower with 281 lb.-ft. of torque, fuel economy ratings are estimated to be: 16/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined for the 4×2 models and 17/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined for the 4×4 models.
The all-new 9-speed automatic transmission is similar to the new 9-speed automatic introduced on the 2020 Titan and is designed to maximize powertrain efficiency and provide enhanced acceleration feel. As in the new Titan, it offers quick, crisp and direct shift response throughout the entire gear range.
Other 2020 Enhancements
The 2020 Frontier offers a number of other upgrades for the new model year, including standard push button start plus standard leather shift knob, manual tilt steering, power points, power door locks. power windows with driver side auto-down plus a leather appointed interior on the Crew Cab.
A new Special Edition Package is offered on Crew Cab SV. The package joins the previously available Value Truck Package and Midnight Edition Package (with a ‘twist’).
Frontier’s reputation for rugged capability continues. Starting with a full-length, fully boxed ladder frame constructed of high tensile-strength steel, the platform provides structural rigidity for rock-solid performance both on- and off-road.
Underneath, Frontier features an all-steel double-wishbone front suspension and solid axle rear suspension with overslung leaf springs and a long suspension stroke for off-road performance.
Other driveline components include engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and standard 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System.
Frontier 4×4 models include a shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive system with 2WD/4H/4LO modes operated by an electronically controlled part-time transfer case. Frontier 4×4 models are available with 4-wheel limited-slip system, which helps transfer power to the drive wheels with more grip on low traction surfaces.
The Hill Descent Control feature allows slow hill descent without the constant application of the brake pedal. Hill Start Assist can allow the driver to stop on an incline and not roll back while the driver moves his or her foot to the accelerator.
For off-roading, Frontier offers ground clearances of 8.9 inches (4×2) or 10.1 inches (4×4) and skid plates for oil pan, fuel tank and transfer case.
Depending on the model and configuration, the 2020 Frontier tows up to 6,720 pounds.
Authentic Frontier Utility and Style
In a segment where truck dimensions continue to grow, Frontier remains a true mid-size truck. Or, as we say – fits in your garage.
Still, Frontier is big enough – with a choice of standard and long wheelbase models – to handle large loads of cargo, work equipment or building materials. A 5-foot bed is standard on all Crew Cab models, with a 6-foot bed optional on Crew Cab SV Long Wheelbase models. The 6-foot bed is standard on all King Cab models.
Both Frontier King Cab and Crew Cab offer an available high-utility bed that includes a factory-applied spray-on bedliner and Utili-track Channel System.
The Utili-Track system provides ultimate cargo hauling flexibility through the use of five special “C” cross-section rails mounted in the bed. Removable utility cleats slide into the channels, providing a wide range of attaching points for securing cargo.
A full range of accessories is offered for use with the channel system, including bed dividers, sliding cargo trays and modular storage units.
All Frontier pickups feature a locking tailgate and cargo bed light.
The exterior of the 2020 Frontier retains a number of signature Nissan truck themes – an angled strut grille, large bumpers, short front and rear overhangs and large, stamped-steel geometric fender flares.
Frontier’s interior features outstanding functionality combined with comfort and intelligent design. Both Frontier King Cab and Crew Cab feature large rear doors (rear hinged on King Cab) for easy access to the rear seating and cargo areas and flip-up rear seats, along with excellent cab storage and flexibility.
Useful storage boxes are tucked beneath the rear seats. A locking dual glove box, center console storage, one-liter bottle storage integrated into the front doors and a multitude of cupholders.
