Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0L V6 gets 32 mpg highway

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be rated at 32 mpg highway and 22 mpg city – for the 4×2 models – and 29/21 mpg highway/city for 4×4 models.

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel fuel economy score falls just short of the Chevrolet Silverado rating of 33/23 mpg highway/city in 4×2 configurations and beats the similar F-150 rating of 30/22 mpg highway/city.

Though not taking the absolute top mpg score in the segment, Ram does own the top mpg score for the trucks in the biggest part of the segment. Which, at the end of the day, is what really matters.

According to Ram, more than 80 percent of the full-size truck purchase mix is in 4×4 models. They also point out that, coincidentally, the Ram 1500 4×4 fuel economy rating of 29/21 mpg highway/city surpasses both competitors’ ratings for a similar truck.

In our book, that makes the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel the absolute winner for the half-ton segment.

But there is more.

Performance Matters

At the end of the day, many people tell us, that while high fuel economy scores are important, how the truck performs is more important.

Looking at overall performance, the new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel in the 2020 Ram 1500 delivers a stout 260 horsepower.  More importantly, it leads the half-ton pickup truck segment where it really counts with torque of 480 lb.-ft. and diesel towing capability of 12,560 pounds.

How good is that compared to the competition?

  • A Silverado Duramax Diesel produces 277 horsepower with 460 ft.-lbs of torque but tows just 9,300 pounds
  • The F-150 Power Stroke Diesel produces 250 horsepower with 440 lb.-ft. of torque and tows 11,400 pounds.

Plus, the new 3.0L EcoDiesel engine is available in all models and configurations including – for the first time – the 2020 Ram Rebel.

And, when equipped with an available 33-gallon fuel tank, a Ram 1500 4×4 EcoDiesel has a range of over 1,000 miles.  In layman’s terms, that is being able to drive from Dallas to Chicago on a single tank with enough left to visit Navy Pier before filling up.

Pricing

The new Ram EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option, or a $3,000 premium over the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 eTorque equipped Ram 1500.  The premium on Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Rebel and Laramie base models powered by the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is $3,300.

A 2020 Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD equipped with the new EcoDiesel has a MSRP of $36,890.

Ram Classic Diesel

While launching the latest generation 2020 Ram 1500 trucks, Ram has elected to continue production of a group of 2019 models. Designated the Ram 1500 Classic – they are also available with an EcoDiesel engine.

Powered by the second-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel (240 horsepower / 420 lb.-ft. of torque), a Ram 1500 Classic Crew Cab prices at $39,140.
