2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition with Yakima Megawarrior Roof Rack
Over five model generations (since 1984) the Toyota 4Runner has delivered adventure excitement across America – around town, in the country and over a countless number of roads less traveled.
For 2020, the body-on-frame, do-anything SUV adds a new model – 4Runner Venture Edition – chock full of utility, style and features suited for wherever your adventures may take you – even where there are no roads.
All 4Runner grades receive a number of enhancements for 2020 including Toyota’s active safety system TSS-P and an updated infotainment that includes a larger 8-inch touchscreen, Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility plus more.
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition adds still more.
The new 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition (based on the TRD Off-Road Premium) adds more utility and flair in a package designed for adventuring everywhere, says Toyota.
Immediately noticed is the standard Yakima Megawarrior Roof Rack. Mounted just behind a Power Tilt/Slide Moonroof, the heavy-duty steel rack is supported by the included roof rack cross bars. Constructed of heavy-duty steel, the Megawarrior roof rack provides additional roof-top storage in a spacious tray measuring 52 inches in length, 48 inches in width and 6.5 inches in height.
Additional cargo capacity and flexibility is available in the form of a Rear Sliding Cargo Deck for ease of loading and unloading. Beneath the deck is an underfloor storage box for even more cargo.
The cargo bay is equipped with a 120V 100W/400W AC power outlet allowing the 440-pound capacity cargo deck to also become a platform for multiple uses while adventuring.
Other unique external elements that set Venture Edition apart from other 4Runner models include Gunmetal-colored 17-inch TRD wheels mounted with P265/70R17 Mud/Snow radial tires, all-weather floor mats, Black side mirrors, door handles and rear spoiler and Black ‘Toyota’ and ‘4Runner’ Badges.
Getting to Adventure
Power for the 2020 Venture Edition comes from the standard 4.0L V6 engine producing 270 horsepower with 278 lb.-ft. of torque. It is mated to the very reliable 5-speed ECTi automatic transmission with (manual) Sequential Shift Mode. Well-powered, the 4Runner Venture Edition tows too – up to 5,000 pounds. All 4Runners come equipped standard with an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness. All you need to add is the ball hitch and the trailer full of adventure gear.
Built on 4Runner’s proven body-on-frame construction equipped with a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension, Venture Edition has 9.6-inches of ground clearance. It features Approach/Departure Angles of 33/26-degrees respectively for tackling rougher terrain. Venture is also equipped with Skid Plates covering the engine, front suspension and fuel tank for the toughest terrain.
Venture Edition uses a part-time 4WD system that features a 2-speed transfer case with selectable low range. When the going really gets rough, a selectable rear locker comes standard to provide added traction when needed in low range.
Other serious adventuring tools in Venture Edition’s 4×4 kit include:
- Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) that helps maintain traction by distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground when it senses wheel slippage.
- Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) to help improve grip by controlling wheel spin based on the terrain setting (like dirt, sand or rock) selected by the driver.
- CRAWL control – with five low-speed settings – provides additional off-road functionality by regulating engine speed and braking force to slowly move the vehicle in forward or reverse.
Available also is a favorite of ours – the Toyota Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDDS). The KDDS continuously adjusts the suspension in response to the terrain conditions for optimal traction at all times. We would not buy the Venture Edition without this option.
Other 4Runner Venture Edition Features
Inside the cabin, 4Runner Venture Edition features an updated multimedia system (now) with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, all of which can be controlled on 4Runner’s new 8-inch touchscreen.
The sound system includes 8 speakers through the cabin, and the multimedia system features HandsFree Bluetooth phone and music operation.
In front of the driver is new Optitron instrumentation includinga 4.2-inch MID screen to control multiple functions and provide additional vehicle details, such as tire pressure, average fuel economy and more.
Inside, the Venture Edition is fitted with SofTex-trimmed, heated front seats. Second row 40/20/40 fold-flat reclining seating is also SofTex-trimmed. Rear-seat passengers will also appreciate the addition of two USB ports to charge devices.
Venture Edition will also have standard Smart Key with Push Button Start.
Another distinctive feature – key for us – is the standard Power Real Liftgate Window that provides flexible access to the rear cargo bay area.
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition is priced at $44,285 MSRP.
Adding the Rear Sliding Cargo Deck, Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDDS) – plus freight – a 4Runner Venture Edition will set you back $47,560.
