2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition adventuring continues

Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition – adventuring made easy

When the Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition was launched last year, the 4Runner had already delivered over five model generations of adventure excitement across America – around town, in the country and over a countless number of roads less traveled.

For 2021, the body-on-frame, do-anything anywhere Toyota 4Runner Mid-size SUV continues their Venture Special Edition even more targeted for out-back adventuring.

Chock full of utility, style and features suited for wherever your adventures may take you – even where there are no roads – this 2021 Venture Special Edition meets the need priced measurably under $50,000.

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition (based on the TRD Off-Road Premium) adds more utility and flair in a powerful package designed for adventuring everywhere.

2021 Venture Special Edition as Tested

Our 2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition was boldly clad in Barcelona Red Metallic with Black interior trappings, sporting Black off-road wheels, distinctive Black Yakima Megawarrior Roof Rack and Black accents and badging.

Other standard Venture Special Edition elements included its Matte Black 17-inch TRD wheels mounted with P265/70R17 Nitto Terra Grappler Mud/Snow radial tires, Black side mirrors, door handles and rear spoiler, all weather floor mats inside and the Black ‘Toyota’ and ‘4Runner’ Badges.

Of note were the addition (this year) of LED headlights and fog lights for improved highway and backcountry travel visibility.

Strength and Power or Back Country Adventure

The 2021 Venture Special Edition is powered by Toyota’s rugged 4.0L V6 engine producing 270 horsepower with 278 lb.-ft. of torque.  It is mated to Toyota’s very reliable 5-speed ECTi automatic transmission with (manual) Sequential Shift Mode.

Venture Special Edition is equipped with Toyotas durable a part-time 4WD system that features a 2-speed transfer case with selectable low range.  When the going really gets rough, its standard Torsen selectable rear locker provide additional traction both axle and/or wheel-for-wheel when needed.

Built on 4Runner’s proven body-on-frame construction equipped with a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension, Venture Special Edition has 9.6-inches of ground clearance. Plenty enough for most adventure trail running.

Just in case the driver cuts it a bit short on occasion, a full set of Skid Plates protect the engine, front suspension and fuel tank from damage when running trails, hill climbing and descending the toughest terrain.  Enhancing that capability are the vehicle’s ample 33/26-degree approach/departure angles.

Key terrain controls mounted at overhead console

Other adventure enhancing tools in our Venture Special Edition’s standard 4×4 tool kit included:

  • Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) that helps maintain traction by distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground when it senses wheel slippage.
  • Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) to help improve grip by controlling wheel spin based on the terrain setting (like dirt, sand or rock) selected by the driver.
  • CRAWL control – with five low-speed settings – provides additional off-road functionality by regulating engine speed and braking force to slowly move the vehicle in forward or reverse.

But there was more.  Our Venture Special Edition featured the optional Toyota Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDDS). The KDDS continuously adjusts the suspension in response to the terrain conditions for optimal traction at all times. Some have been known to claim it does all of the hard work for you.

NOTE: If you are truly seeking to be the master of your outdoor adventuring you must buy your Venture Special Edition with this option.

Venture Hauls

The 2021 Venture Special Edition hauls up to five easily and comfortably to your most remote adventure location.

More importantly it brings along all of the gear and toys you need for that perfect week or weekend of roughing it way out back.

In the cabin, there is 45.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.  Fold the second row down and Venture offers up to a whopping 88.8 cubic feet of cargo storage.

That Megawarrior roof rack we mentioned earlier – besides looking downright awesome – provides additional storage in a spacious tray measuring 52 inches in length, 48 inches in width and 6.5 inches in height.

Making all of that cargo space more useful, our Venture Special Edition was equipped with the optional Rear Sliding Cargo Deck for ease of loading and unloading. A bonus is the underfloor storage box for even more cargo – secure and out of sight.

Still more utility in the cargo bay was provided by a 120V 100W/400W AC power outlet that enabled the 440-pound capacity cargo deck to provide multiple functions when adventuring.

Venture Special Edition Tows Too

If you still have stuff to haul or want to bring along selected back country toys – 4Runner Venture Special Edition tows too – up to 5,000 pounds.  All 4Runners come equipped standard with an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness. All you need to add is the ball hitch and your trailer full of adventure gear and/or your choice of back country toys.

Other Venture Special Edition Features

Inside the cabin, 4Runner Venture Special Edition is equipped with an updated multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, all of which can be controlled on 4Runner’s new 8-inch touchscreen.

The sound system includes 8 speakers through the cabin, and the multimedia system features Hands-free Bluetooth phone and music operation.

In front of the driver is bright and clear Optitron instrumentation including a 4.2-inch MID screen displaying multiple functions and provide additional vehicle details, such as tire pressure, average fuel economy and more.

Venture Special Edition is fitted with SofTex-trimmed, heated and powered front seats. Second row 40/20/40 fold-flat reclining seating also SofTex-trimmed.

We call out another distinctive feature – the standard Power Rear Liftgate Window that provides flexible access to the rear cargo bay area. We really like this for ease or access to the cargo area (plus the 120V power point) without having to open the hatch.

Wherever you want to go outback and whatever you want to bring along, the 2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition can handle it.

Our 2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition was priced at $44,720 MSRP.

Adding the Rear Sliding Cargo Deck, Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDDS) – plus freight – this 2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Special Edition priced in our garage at $48,044.
