The iconic Toyota Supra returned in 2020 – ready for the road or the track, comfortable and fast. In 2021, Toyota boosted the GR Supra offering with a more powerful V6 turbo power plant, retuned chassis and added a four-cylinder turbo (Supra 2.0) for enthusiasts to choose from.

We drove the 2021 Toyota GR 3.0 Premium for a full week all around Central Texas – developing a wicked smile with every mile we travelled. The GR 3.0 was just about perfect – in our estimation – for that road enthusiast who might use his Supra as a daily driver too.

During that week we wondered how the GR Supra 2.0 (about $10,000 less) would measure up to the 3.0. Would we be grinning with every mile we travelled in the Supra 2.0 – like we did in the 3.0?

We had the chance find out this year when Toyota sent us a 2022 GR Supra 2.0 for drive test.

The short answer is yes.

Even without the big engine, some of the performance tuning and more premium features of the 3.0, we found we still would like to have had more time behind the wheel – enjoying the drive and the ride of really good sports coupe for about $10,000 less.

2021 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 – As Tested

Our test GR Supra 2.0 with a bold Renaissance Red exterior and Black Alcantara leather interior.

Its distinctive roof profile, bold front grille, sleek coupe lines, arching rear spoiler and active dual exhausts deliver an aerodynamically efficient unique look.

The 18-inch Cast Aluminum Wheels – mounted w/Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tires (255/40 ZR18 front and 275/40 ZR19 rear) – complete a look that screams ‘FAST’ – even when standing still.

The base Supra 2.0 has a MSRP of $43,290.  Our test vehicle had the optional Safety and Technology Package ($3,485) included which added back a considerable group of features found on the Supra 3.0 Premium.

The ‘in the garage’ price for our test 2022 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 was $47,845.

Powertrain

Under the hood, the 2022 GR Supra 2.0 is powered by a 2.0L direct injection four-cylinder engine w/twin-scroll turbocharger.  This power plant delivers a more than adequate 255 horsepower with 295 lb.-ft. of torque through the performance engineered 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

The 2022 GR Supra 2.0 has power to fly. It features Drive Mode Select, (Normal and Sport) for added performance.  Its Vehicle Stability Control System has a Traction Control setting for additional performance.  A Launch Control feature (Sport Drive Mode or Traction Stability Control Mode) when selected, optimizes standing start acceleration.

For those who like the sound of performance as well, our GR Supra 2.0 was fitted with a tuned Active Exhaust – adding adds just the right level of note (‘rumble’) – both accelerating and decelerating.  Subtle yet powerful – put the hammer down and they know you are coming.

Interior

GR Supra features a roomy cabin designed nicely for two – both comfort and convenience. In particular we noted the sport styled seating with Alcantara leather trim and the carbon fiber cabin trim accents around the cabin.

The headroom in GR Supra is a bit short for tall folks (38.3-inches).  The 8-way adjustable driver seat is sufficiently to mitigates the headroom challenge. With well-placed seat bolstering and sport knee cushions, seat position is comfortable with good driver visibility and control.  Leg room is more than adequate with good shoulder room.

Other elements of note include a large Single Meter Digital Display that incorporates and consolidates all the information a driver needs for daily or performance driving, Smart Key w/smart entry and start, Dual Automatic Climate Control and Leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel.

Technology and Infotainment

Technology and infotainment elements in the GR Supra 2.0 include – mounted at the top of the stack – an 8.8-inch Touchscreen w/Navigation that brightly displays information needed.

Audio is provided by a JBL 500-watt 12-speaker Audio System that features Apple CarPlay compatibility, SiriusXM and AM/FM radio, Handsfree Bluetooth Streaming and more.

A console-mounted Rotary Touch Pad Controller gives the driver single touch control of all the elements.

Other features include Wireless Smartphone Charging, Smart Key w/Smart Entry, Push Button Start and Toyota Supra Connect Telematics Services.

Safety & Convenience

The GR Supra does not lack for standard safety and convenience features.

They include Six-Lens LED Headlamps w/Auto On-Off and Automatic High Beams, LED Rear Combination Lamps, Rear Camera, Automatic Rain Sensing Wipers, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking w/Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning w/Steering Assist and Electronic Parking Brake

In addition, our GR Supra 2.0 included Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Parking sensors w/Emergency Brake Function.

2022 GR Supra Lineup

In addition to the GR Supra 2.0, the lineup includes a 3.0 ($51,640), 3.0 Premium ($54,790) and an A91-CF Edition ($63,380).
