The Toyota Prius Hybrid – for over 20 years has been an innovator and leader in small car hybrid technology coupled with frugal value and latest amenities. For 2024 the Toyota Prius Hybrid continues that iconic leadership – reliable, quick and frugal with all of the newest amenities available.
AS TESTED
We have tested Prius earlier generations and were delighted to get a 2024 Toyota Prius Limited AWD Hybrid for test recently for evaluation.
Clad in their signatureReservoir Blue with a nice Gradient Black interior and riding on 19-inch alloy wheels mounted with Michelin Primacy AS tires it was every bit as handsome in its unique way as ever. And yes, even a better drive than we had recalled.
Our test 2024 Toyota Prius Limited AWD Hybrid had an MSRP of $36,365. Adding in a couple of options plus delivery, it arrived in our drive priced at $39,474.
POWERTRAIN
As you might expect, in our view, Toyota builds the best hybrid powertrain in the market today. The fifth-generation version in the 2024 Prius we tested continues to bolster our confidence that it is still the best.
Toyota’s 2024 Hybrid Synergy System powertrain consists ofAtkinson Cycle 2.0-L 4-cylinder engine integrated (the ‘synergy’) with a Motor Generator driving front wheels while also providing battery regeneration during braking. The AWD (electronic On Demand) function is driven by a separate Motor Generator at the rear axle.
The 196 hp / 139 lb.-ft. torque output is managed by their equally reliable Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT) with driver selectable Drive Modes (Normal, Sport, Custom and ECO)
Nimble and pretty quick, our Prius Limited AWD acceleration is reported to be 0-60 mph in just 7 seconds. It is also frugal at the gas pump – economy rated at 49/50/49 MPG City/Highway/Combined.
EXTERIOR
There is no missing the Prius. Its iconic flowing lines are distinctive yet simple with efficient purpose. In its signature Toyota signature Reservoir Blue and 19-inch alloy wheels and tires, you can easily pick it out from the pack on the road or in the parking lot.
Appropriately equipped, its functional features included LED lighting Bi Projector Low and High Beam Headlights, Daytime Running Lights and Tail and Stop Lights, Heated Power Folding Mirrors, Rain Sensing Variable Intermittent Wipers with Washer Link and Power Rear Liftgate with Tonneau Cover.
Of note are the unique ‘Electric’ rear door handles that – though quite efficient – can be confusing when first encountered.
INTERIOR
Standard features included an easy-to-read Top-Mount 7-inch Multi-Information Display with customizable settings.
The front seats were SofTex trimmed with 8-way (power) adjust for the driver and 6-way (manual) for the passenger. Front seating is both heated and ventilated. The driver seat had memory with two settings. Seating was comfortable and very supportive.
Center console was simple and strait forward with easy to operate Shift-by-Wire and related controls and nice sized storage bin.
Rear seating was 60/40 fold-down with a center armrest. In our Prius Limited, the rear seats were also heated.
Other features include a SofTex trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel with controls for audio, Multi-Information Display and Bluetooth Handsfree phone and single zone climate control system featured both dust and pollen filters.
We found the interior was adequately sized with wide doors allowing easy access for even big and tall folks like the writer.
We particularly like the Fixed Glass Sunroof. Where we live,we find most people do not use open/tilt feature in traditional sunroofs. But they do like the light from a glass roof. Prius takes that a step better by providing separate sunshades front and rear to allow a choice on where and how much light to let in
to the cabin.
TECHNOLOGY / INFOTAINMENT / CONVENIENCE
Infotainment and related is managed through a vibrant 12.3-inch Multimedia Touchscreen with Integrated Backup Camera Display and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless compatibility, Sirius XM and 8-speaker JBL Premium Audio with amplifier.
Other elements included Digital Key Capability, Smart Key System with Push Button Start and Remote Access, Qi Wireless Smartphone Charging and six USB-c Charge Ports.

SAFETY
In addition to being an unabashed admirer of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy powertrains, I also admire their Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 safety system – the most complete in the industry.
It comes standard on all Toyota Prius models and includes Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams and Proactive Driving Assist.

Complimenting Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is the Toyota Star Safety System also standard across all models. It features Enhanced Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist plus Smart Stop.
Also standard across most Prius models are Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking, Vehicle Proximity Notification, Hill Start Assist, Rear Seat Minder and Tire Pressure Monitor System.
Our test Prius Limited AWD was also equipped with a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert plus a Premium Package including a Panoramic View Monitor with 360-degree Overhead View in low-speed drive and reverse and Curb View.
It should be no wonder thatthe 2024 Toyota Prius has received a highest rating 2024 Top Safety Pick+ by the prestigious IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
