Drivetrain

Performance overall was not in question. Acura’s drivetrain technology uses a 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission (with a manual shifting mode), producing a combined output of 321 HP and 289 lb-ft of torque. I could get into the specifics of the Twin Motor Unit (TMU), torque distribution among the wheels, or how the MDX is equipped with a regenerative braking system and active damping suspension – but if you’re anything like me, it just goes flying right over my head. The proof is in the drive and the Sport Hybrid MDX was an absolute blast to drive, especially through the curves!

Fuel economy ratings are 26/27 city/highway mpg and 27 combined. City driving produced a more consistent fuel rating as my mpg seemed to fluctuate slightly on the highway.

Exterior

The 2017 MDX Hybrid looks similar to the rest of the 2017 MDX models. Though there were only minor style updates to the exterior, the 2017 models now include a new diamond shaped grille with the Acura logo, a more muscular hood and lighting that is more streamlined.

Interior

The interior has plenty of storage compartments and Acura was thoughtful as there is plenty of access to bins throughout the cabin. The driver and passenger seats are comfortable with plenty of adjustment. Second row seating has the option of bench seating or captain’s chairs with the Advance package. The captain’s chairs provide plenty of space and an exquisite center console which also provides extra storage. The rear passengers have separate climate controls and extra charging ports as well

One major downside of the 2017 Acura MDX is the third row. No regular-sized adult is going to be comfortable for any extended amount of time. Consider it a space dedicated for kids, however even the ‘big’ kids may complain with the lack of legroom. Unless you need the third row, it is best to leave these seats folded down and enjoy the extra cargo space. Speaking of cargo space, it is outstanding. There are easy to use controls that are accessible from the rear hatch as well as both side doors.

The MDX Sport Hybrid has a dual-screen infotainment setup in the center console and it’s as confusing as ever. The upper screen focuses on vehicle information, including how well the vehicle is performing regarding fuel efficiency and battery charge. The lower screen focuses on entertainment and smartphone connectivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto however, are not offered. The graphics are also in dire need of an upgrade. 

Technology and safety in the 2017 Acura MDX include land departure warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

Base level inclusions on the Sport Hybrid include remote engine start, automatic wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and navigation. Add the Advance package to receive parking sensors, heated steering, surround-view camera, captains chairs and the extra storage in the center console. 

The 2017 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is a solid hybrid SUV choice to be considered. And despite the miss on the infotainment system and lack of room in the third row, the MDX Sport Hybrid delivers a memorable driving experience.
