Mazda introduced their brand new 2025 CX-70 mid-size two-row crossover late this last spring.
The CX-70 will offer seven different packages across three models to best fit the needs of an active customer base, says Mazda. Features include robust electrified powertrains, sporty design elements, handsome interiors, ‘just right’ technology and convenience plus innovative and generous cargo space.
Couple that with affordable pricing – starting at $40,445 – the new CX-70 should get lots of attention.
AS TESTED
Mazda sent us, just off the assembly line, a top trim level 2025 CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus last week for a test drive.
Clad in their fresh Melting Copper Metallic color, premium Red Nappa Leather seating with complimenting accents and standing tall on 21-inch wheels and tires – this baby was impressive in our driveway even before we got behind the wheel.
The CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus comes loaded up with a MSRP of $57,450. Adding the new color surcharge and delivery – it priced at $59,275.
Let’s take a closer look at the new CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus.
Spoiler Alert: It drove every bit as good as it looked.
EXTERIOR
The exterior of the new CX-70 updates the classic Mazda signature look with new sporty aggressiveness featuring a wide and low front fascia and chiseled front end. Contrasting black accents throughout the exterior, and two-tone black metal and machine cut finished 21-inch wheels, present a bold stance for the CX-70 – standing still or running down the road.
Functional elements include Power Panoramic Sunroof, Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers with De-Icer, Automatic Heated Power Folding Side Mirrors, Adaptive LED headlights, LED running lights, LED taillights, Heated Side Mirrors plus Black Roof Spoiler, Grille, Wheel Arch Moldings, and Roof Rails.
POWERTRAIN
The CX-70 PHEV is equipped with the e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain. It combines an electric motor powered by a 17.8-kWh battery pack with to a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. Producing a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque (premium fuel) – the CX-70 PHEV can to travel up to 26 miles on pure electric power and up to 56 MPGe combined.
All CX-70 PHEV models are equipped with the SkyActiv Drive 8-speed automatic transmissionand i-Activ All-Wheel Drive featuring Hill Launch Assist and Mi-Drive intelligent drive select with Sport, Road, Towing and EV (electric motor only) Modes.
The CX-70 Premium Plus PHEV tows up to 3,500 pounds when equipped with Mazda towing accessories. To support trailer hookup, the 360 degree View Monitor hasa trailer hitch view to make backing up for hooking easier.
Charging of the CX-70 battery pack is easy using the supplied connection device. Recharging times are:
Level 1 (110V connection) 80% charge – 6hrs / 40min and 100% charge – 11hrs.
Level 2 (240V connection) 80% charge – 1hr / 30mins and 100% charge – 2hrs / 20min.

INTERIOR
The interior is well designed, handsome and very driver/passenger comfortable.
Functional features included a vibrant 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster with a head-up Active Driving Display, Eight-Way Power Adjustable Heated and Ventilated Seating (both driver and passenger), Heated Second-Row Seating, Three-Zone Automatic Climate Control, and Rear Sunshades
Cargo space is generous and offers convenience with Remote Power Folding Second Row Seating, Hands-Free Power Liftgate, 150V Power Source, compartments for small items and a Hidden Subfloor for security.
TECHNOLOGY / CONVENIENCE
Our CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus featured a 12.3-inch Mazda Connect infotainment display with touch functionality, Bose 12-speaker Premium Audio, Wireless Phone Charging, Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio and four USB-C inputs for device charging.
New for Mazda is the integration of ALEXA that allows the driver to make hands-free commands to vehicle systems.
Included also is Mazda Online Navigation with a 360-degree View Monitor with See Through View.
All technology controls – touch and (yes) dial – were readily identifiable, well placed and easy to access.
SAFETY
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV is rated a 2024 Top Safety Pick by the prestigious Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
A complete suite of Mazda i-Activsense Safety Features are standard. Heading the list are Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane-keep Assist, Driver Attention Alert, Rear-View Monitor with Dynamic Guide Lines and Vehicle Exit Warning plus Rear Seat Alert.
Included also was Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Speed Limit Assist and Front and Rear Parking Sensors. Cruising & Traffic Support now includes Unresponsive Driver Support which can detect an incapacitated driver and bring the vehicle to a stop.
Other features were Emergency Lane Keeping with Blind Spot Assist, Road-keep Assist and Head-on Traffic Avoidance Assist, as well as Traffic Sign Recognition and Secondary Collision Reduction.
WARRANTY
The Mazda warranty for new vehicles include 3-year 36,000 miles New Vehicle plus 5- year 60,000 miles Powertrain coverage.
