Not long ago, our friends at Range Rover sent us their all-new 2020 Range Rover Evoque compact luxury SUV for evaluation.
Range Rover says they pulled all the stops for the 2020 Evoque with new body architecture, updated suspension integration, added technology, more luxuriously appointed cabin and groundbreaking off-road capabilities.
After a week behind the wheel that included city and freeway driving plus a field trip to Dallas and back – we agree.
Our test Evoque was the new top trim Evoque First Edition model sporting a stunning urban metallic finish called Nolita Grey. Its contrasting gloss Black top featured a fixed Panoramic Sun Roof.
Accenting the Nolita Grey finish was a Black linear body trim finish and subtle Burnished Copper accents. Completing the look were bold 21-inch split-spoke Gloss Light Silver alloy wheels.
Our 2020 Range Rover Evoque First Edition had a MSRP of $56,850. Adding the premium Nolita Grey color, optional 21-inch 5 Split Spoke wheels mounted with 245/45R21 Pirelli tires, an Adaptive Dynamics Package plus delivery, this beauty arrived in our garage priced at $59,715.
The all-new second-generation Evoque continues its easily recognized signature coupe-like silhouette with a fast roofline, raised beltline and strong shoulders and wheel arches.
Features of note include Premium Automatic LED Headlights with Auto High Beam Assist, Automatic Leveling and Headlight Power Washer. At the rear are new LED Signature Hi-Line Tail Lights and a Center High-Mount Stop Light. Evoque features fog lights too – both front and rear.
Other elements include Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers and Rear Window Wash Wiper and Auto-Dimming, Power Folding Heated Side Mirrors with Approach Illumination Lamps, and finely-crafted Flush Exterior Door Handles. Interior Interior features are enhanced by the simple design and application of very premium materials throughout. Our Evoque First Edition interior was in a Cloud/Ebony combination with leather grained seating surfaces, Morzine headliner and Gradated Dark Aluminum Accents.
The front seating was 14-way power adjustable – heated and ventilated. A large console featured twin sliding armrest with storage, cupholders plus smartphone charging and connectivity.
Climate Control was Dual Zone and featured filtration along with ducting to the rear seats. Interior lighting elements included overhead reading light plus configurable ambient interior lighting and illuminated metal threshold plates.
Powertrain and Mechanical
The 2020 Evoque First Edition is powered by a 2.0L Turbocharged I4 that produces 246 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque delivered through a 9-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain features Paddle Shifters, Push Button and Remote Start and Auto/Stop Start.
Our Evoque First Edition featured Active Dynamics that adjust suspension and dampers every 100 milliseconds for optimal ride comfort and control. Additional handling features included Electric Power-Assisted Steering, Torque Vectoring by Braking, Dynamic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control.
We were seriously impressed with how well this compact SUV handled the road – performing equal to or better than some of the best full-size luxury sedans or SUV’s.
Infotainment and Technology
An impressive 12.3-inch driver instrumentation and information display behind the steering wheel provides all necessary vehicle performance and situational data.
The center stack features a sharply crafted InControlTouch Pro Duo System for audio and feature control.
It is comprised of two 10-inch high-definition Touch Screens (one above the other) with large dials below the lower screen.
The dual screens offer the ability to simultaneously access multiple features such as the Navigation Pro above and media below. The large multi-function dials can be used in lieu of the touchscreen for specific functions like climate control temperature or audio volume.
Audio in Evoque is pretty first class. It’s Meridian Sound System delivered very high-quality sound through its ten door-mounted (yes, door) and dual channel subwoofer.
Infotainment features include smartphone integration, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, SiriusXM, AM/FM Radio, Bluetooth Hands-Free Connectivity and more.
A Connect Pro feature adds 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot (up to eight devices) and links to ProServices plus Range Rover Smart Settings system.
Lastly, the bold and clear full color Head-up Display can display relevant vehicle data and navigation directions.
AWD On/Off Road Capable
Our urban styled 2020 Evoque First Edition came loaded with ‘groundbreaking’ off-road features including the driver selectable Terrain Response 2 Technology that in “AUTO”, can automatically select from the available five drive modes to meet terrain challenges.
The AWD system is Torque on Demand to the Rear Axle with standard Driveline Disconnect. In addition, it has Low Traction Launch, Hill Launch Assist and Hill Descent Control for those more difficult situations.
In order to face even more challenging terrain, Evoque First Edition has a ground clearance of 8.3-inches. It features approach/departure angles of 25 and 30.6 degrees respectively to handle more aggressive slopes reaching 45 degrees vertical and 35 degrees lateral.
In the unlikely event you get stuck (mind you there are five drive modes to work with), Evoque has recovery hooks front and rear.
For more aggressive off-road terrain, a buyer can arrange for installation of Range Rover stainless steel front and rear skid plates.
Another Innovative feature is their ClearSight Ground View camera technology. It provides 360-degree surround view normal situations. When needing to traverse rougher terrain, it can provide 180 degree under the front bumper and hood clear views.
Our Evoque First Edition handles water hazards too – able to ford water up to 23.6-inches deep. YES, we said nearly two feet! AND, to avoid water deeper than that, there is a Wade Sensing feature that monitors water depth real time and displays it on the touchscreen.
Hauling the Gear
The extended wheelbase of the new platform not only gives the 2020 Evoque more space in the rear row, but adds cargo space over prior year.
Behind the second row Evoque now has 21.54 cubic feet of cargo space. Drop the 40:20:40 rear seats and the space is 50.5 cubic feet. For maximum utility, the cargo area is fitted with a Remote Powered Liftgate, lights, cargo hooks and tie downs.
Got more ‘stuff’ than the cargo bay will hold? Evoque can be fitted with a cargo/bike/aqua sports rack on its roof rails. For the bigger stuff or even a small camping trailer, Evoque tows too – nearly 5,000 pounds – when properly equipped. The optional tow package prices at $1,399.
ClearSight Rear View Mirror
Considering rear visibility challenges with cargo and when towing, we note that Evoque for 2020 also offers the ClearSight Rear View Mirror. Using a high mount low-light camera, it allows a driver to use the rear-view mirror to see behind the vehicle when the cargo bay is fully loaded and/or keep an eye on a trailer under tow while underway.
Driver Assist Technology
A full range of Driver Assistance and safe driving features include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go and High-Speed Braking, Rear Traffic and Parking Camera, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Braking for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, Park Assist Sensors, Tire Pressure Monitoring, Driver Condition Monitor (think drowsy) and more.
Of special note was the Traffic Sign Recognition with the Adaptive Speed Limiter feature that adjusts vehicle speed according to traffic signage.
2020 Range Rover Evoque Lineup
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque is available both as a gasoline model and a mild-hybrid (MHEV). Each has three trim levels. The gasoline version starts at MSRP $42,650 (S) with the MHEV MSRP starting at $46,600 (R-Dynamic S).
