Detroit built Mahindra Roxor UTV challenging traditional powersports market
The Mahindra Roxor – launched in Spring 2018 – is the newest entry to the fast-growing powersport UTV vehicle segment. Designed, engineered and assembled in Detroit, Michigan, it targets hunters, farmers, ranchers, campers and other adventure seekers with its rugged capability and low price.
Roxor is not your typical side-by-side UTV. Its most unique difference is the recognizable front-end design and grille that honors its original heritage from 1947 when Willys licensed Mahindra to build a ‘Willys-like’ rugged vehicle.
From that beginning came the wide assortment of Mahindra utility vehicles and trucks in use throughout the world today. In 2013, Mahindra came to Detroit to develop and build the distinctive and simple basic rugged off-road vehicle that they launched this past Spring.
Priced at just $15,499, the 2019 Roxor side-by-side powersport UTV offers basic features and durable functionality that meets the needs of users at one of the lowest prices in the segment.
The 2019 Roxor features body-on-frame construction with a steel body, boxed steel frame, a 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, 5-speed manual gearbox with 2-speed manual 4×4 transfer case, power steering, 96-inch wheel base with 9-inch ground clearance, 11-inch disc brakes front and 11-inch disc brakes rear and a 12-gallon fuel tank.
The 2.5L turbo-diesel engine produces just 62 horsepower but delivers a solid 144 lb.-ft. of torque for handling rugged off-road roads and trails. For 2019, the top-speed of the Roxor is increased from 45 to 55 mph.
Underneath, the Roxor suspension is tied to solid front and rear axles. The suspension features Rigid Leaf Spring with stabilizer bar up front and Leaf Spring with Double Acting Hydraulic Shock Absorbers at the rear.
Seating two, it has a rear payload capacity of 349 pounds for gear and supplies.
But the Roxor UTV also tows. When equipped with the available dual-function pintle/ball trailer hitch, it tows up to 3,490 pounds at a max speed of 15 mph – just right for transporting hay bales on the ranch or moving a load of adventuring gear deep into the woods or far into the outback.
Standard features include mesh doors, Goodyear 235/70 R16 off-road tires mounted on steel wheels, steel bumper, halogen headlights and a textured, bedliner coating on the floor boards and cargo area.
There are six standard colors: Traffic Blue, Traffic Red, Sand, Pure White, Jet Black and Olive Green. In addition, there are over 400 custom colors available along with several camo configurations (including Realtree) plus customizable wraps.
You should also note that the 2019 Roxor weighs in at only 3,035 pounds. Since Roxor is an off-road only vehicle – NOT legal for use on any public street or highway – it can be trailered easily by most SUV’s and trucks to wherever your adventuring begins.
Custom Accessories Available
Highly customizable, Roxor offers available accessories that include a Warn 8,000-pound Winch, AGM Battery, HD Bumper, Bestop hard or soft bikini tops, KC Hi-Lites 40-inch LED light bar, heater, MTX AM/FM Bluetooth sound bar, Kolpin rearview and side mirrors, BF Goodrich KO2 Radial off-road tires mounted on 16-inch aluminum wheels, windshield wiper, Kolpin grab handles, locking differentials and Warn locking hubs.
For more inclement weather conditions, a full-cabin soft enclosure has just been added to the accessory lineup. It features rugged vinyl construction with Mylar back and side windows designed to keep rain, snow and sleet outw of the passenger compartment.
Speaking of snow and sleet, we understand that a snowplow is one of the many additional accessories in development by the Mahindra NA team in Detroit.
And, for those who will ask, Mahindra says a gasoline engine and automatic transmission are also under development for introduction in the future.
