Distinction. Not something that typically came to mind when someone mentioned a Toyota Camry. Reliable? Sure. Safe bet? Absolutely. But distinct, sleek or fun? Not so much. Until now.

Exterior
The front fascia makes a bold statement with its futuristic grille lines, forward-pointing headlamps and the “Toyota wing” which all give a clear sign that the new Camry is indeed point forward. The sportier XSE model takes it up another level with extra aggressive angles and a honeycomb grille and front fascia scoops. Raised hood lines and downward pointing side body panel line that extends from just under the tail lamps all the way to the back of the front wheels, give the 2018 Camry a forward leaning appearance.

Interior
The interior of the 2018 Camry is a bold statement and a clear message that Toyota is committed to progressive interior design. They have traded tired, boring plastics for soft-touch materials and contrast stitching. As with many other automakers, Toyota has shifted the infotainment screen towards the driver but didn’t forget the passenger by including a design-forward dash which includes a wavy trim and leatherette-clad dash swoop.
The interior is also welcoming, generous and roomy, providing an easy entry and exit. Headroom is plentiful as the seats are an inch lower than in the previous year’s model.Toyota has also worked on noise reduction in the cabin as generous amounts of sound deadening insulation were applied to the Camry, delivering a superior ride quality.

Performance
The 2018 Camry XLE V6 is a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve engine mated to a direct shift 8-speed automatic transmission, producing 301 HP and 267 lb. ft. of torque. The driving and performance capability can be described as “spirited” but you won’t be blown away. It is not a sports sedan by any means but it gets the job done well. However, fuel economy isn’t impressive at 22 mpg city / 32 mpg highway for the XLE V6.

Technology
I was a little surprised that Apple CarPlay or Android Auto were not available, instead you must have the Entune app. Connection with Entune is easy enough but it just isn’t all that it could be. With some apps, it was necessary for your phone to be connected with a USB cable in order for them to function as they should.
Our Camry XLE was equipped with an 8-inch touch-screen and included the optional audio upgrade package which includes a JBL premium audio system, a wireless phone charger, and a birds eye view camera system.

Safety
Toyota’s Safety Sense P package comes with forward collision warning, lane departure warning with steering assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The XLE has blind-spot warning with cross-traffic alert or those can be upgrades on the LE and SE trims. Visibility is not a concern with nice size mirrors and blind spots that are almost non-existent. A rear view camera is standard.

In this competitive segment, the Camry goes up against the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, and Honda Accord. All deserve some time behind the wheel, but the bold look of the Camry, the strong fuel economy and the reliability are standout qualities to be considered.
Pricing for the 2018 Camry XLE V6 starts at $34,400 but with options added, our test vehicle total price jumped to $37,680. You can find more detailed information here.
