2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited in Hampton Gray

The new 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is significantly restyled and performance enhanced with more features, innovative technology, better fuel economy and simplified pricing for the consumer.

Offering three feature packed trim levels – with prices running from $27,750 to $35,300 – Hyundai’s Sonata Hybrid for 2020 seriously steps up, raising the bar at every level.

In a recent week long test drive of the new Sonata, as with its gasoline powered sibling, we found it to be a really good drive and comfortable ride.

Sonata Hybrid-As Tested

Our test Sonata Hybrid was the Top-of-the-Line 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited in a very sharp Hampton Gray exterior with a leather trimmed interior.

Featuring Hyundai’s simple pricing formula that limits the extras – putting it all in the MSRP – our Limited Hybrid listed for $35,300.

With delivery and couple of accessories, the delivered price was just $36,430.

Just like our test of the gasoline Sonata Limited a couple of months back, this test drive was absolutely a ‘drop the mic’ experience when looking at that price and then taking a deeper look at all of the features in this car.

Following a week long ride and drive, we are also beyond impressed with all that Hyundai delivers in the new 2020 Sonata Hybrid Limited.

The 2020 Sonata Hybrid power system uses a 2.0L GDI 4-cylinder engine producing 150 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 139 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm.   It is combined with 39 kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 51 horsepower (1,800-2,300 rpm) and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 0-1,800 rpm.

The net horsepower is 192 with fuel economy rated at 45/51/47 mpg city/highway/combined.

The transmission on the Sonata Hybrid is 6-speed electronic automatic with shift lock and Shriftronic manual shift mode.  The shifter is push-button shift-by-wire – easy to operate and making more space available on the console.

The Sonata Hybrid is also equipped driver Drive Mode Select featuring four settings, ECO, Sport, Smart and Custom. ECO speaks for itself – maximizing fuel economy.  Sport adjusts powertrain settings for enhanced performance response. Smart actually learns your driving style over time, making adjustments accordingly or you can choose Custom which offers you through a menu of settings to select from.

The battery for the hybrid system is a Lithium-Ion Polymer unit rated at 270V w/power output of 56 kW.

OF NOTE: Hyundai revised the placement of the battery in the 2020 model.  It not only optimized rear seat space, but also added 2.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk when compared to the 2019 model.

Solar Roof System

There is no Panoramic Sunroof option on Sonata Hybrid. Instead a Solar Roof System makes its debut on the 2020 Sonata Hybrid. The solar-panel roof outputs 205 watts of electricity directly charging to the 12-volt and hybrid batteries.

Hyundai says mileage increases about 2 miles per day (after 6 hours of charging).  The solar panel also prevents unnecessary battery discharge from the infotainment or HVAC systems when the car is off.

Underneath, the 2020 Sonata Hybrid runs on a new vehicle platform featuring enhanced MacPherson Strut suspension front with Multi-link in the rear – delivering a comfortable ride.

The 4-wheel ABS braking with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and 12.0-inch ventilated disc front and 11.2-inch solid discs rear – delivers a crisp brake response.

The Rack and Pinion Motor-Driven Power Steering system w/engine speed sensing power assist is nicely responsive.

Sonata Limited is well planted on the road running on 17-inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels mounted with P215/55R17 all-season tires.

Distinctive exterior styling elements of the Sonata hybrid include the new coupe-like profile highlighted with sharp character lines that are distinctively alluring.

At the front is a new – what they call – Digital Pulse Cascading Grille, Sport Front Bumper Fascia, LED Matrix Headlights and LED Daytime Driving Lights.

OF NOTE are their high-tech Hidden Lighting Lamps. We ask you, are they chrome accents or LED lamps?  The answer is they are both. Chrome by day and light by night

At the rear you find full LED lighting highlighted by an accent strip of LED light that runs between the tail light assemblies.

Of particular note to us was the simplicity of the Sonata Hybrid’s slim dash that runs the width of the cabin.  Highlighted by ambient mood lighting that runs across the dash and then along the doors, its functional elements offer just what you need without any of what you don’t.

The front seating is very comfortable with good head, leg and shoulder room – well situated for driver control and passenger comfort.   Front seating is leather covered, heated and ventilated with 8-way driver and 4-way passenger power adjustment. Easy to drive and comfortable to ride.

OF NOTE is the fit of the cabin elements – in particular the doors – on the new Sonata.  Very well sized and weighted, the fit is exceptional.  In fact, they are equal to (or better) than those on luxury sedans costing twice as much.

Safety and Convenience

Active safety elements include Driver Attention Warning, Highway Driving (Lane Keep and Follow) Assist, Front and Rear Parking Sensors, RearView Monitor, Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist w/Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Parking-Collision Avoidance Assist Rear, Rear Seat Occupant Alert (children or infants in back seat) and Surround View Monitor.

Surround View Camera Front Perspective

OF NOTE is the Forward-Avoidance Collision Assist with Cyclist Detection and Blind-Spot View Monitor systems.  The system uses the digital circular displays in the IP cluster and/or the split screen display in the center stack.  Surround View System cameras provide views alongside, behind or in front of the vehicle when signaling or beginning a turn to visually warn of vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians present.

Alongside View activated by turn signal operation
