The Hyundai Veloster for 2019 comes in six trim levels starting at $18,500 – all featuring new exterior and interior treatments, enhanced powertrains and updated infotainment and connectivity.

Gearbox choices that enable the sport coupe’s performance include a 6-speed manual, SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission and 7-speed EcoShift Dual Clutch automatic transmission.
Last month, Hyundai sent us a top-of-the-line 2019 Veloster Turbo Ultimate for a lifestyle road test. Our test vehicle came in their Chalk White with Black on Black roof and a Gray on Gray interior highlighted by Red Accents.
The delivered price for our Veloster Turbo Ultimate was just $29,990.

Exterior
Our Veloster Turbo Ultimate sported a distinctive profile beginning with a new crisply shaped black grille flanked by LED headlights and daytime running lights. Moving around to the sides you see muscular shoulders forming bold wheel arches for its 18-inch wheels. A smooth integration of the hood line with the A-pillar and moving to the beltline highlights the lowered roofline, accenting the coupe styling.
The two-tone Black on Black roof with its wide sunroof gives it a distinctive flair that flows to the Roof Color Rear Spoiler that stylishly shades the rear hatch glass.
The Veloster Turbo Ultimate features bright LED Headlights, LED Taillights, LED Daytime Running Lights and a LED CHMSL mounted in the rear spoiler.

Other features include Roof Color framed side windows, and Dual Power Fold-away heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators plus tinted glass and variable intermittent windshield wipers.
We noted that Veloster has retained its unique two-plus-one asymmetrical door design allowing easy access to the second-row seating from the passenger side. While Veloster is rated a four-seater and rear seating is tight, access is nicely augmented by the asymmetrical door.

Interior
Upon entering the Veloster Turbo Ultimate, one immediately notices its unique contrasting interior color environment that subtly highlights the cockpit from the passenger area. Darker shades surround the driver with a much lighter tone used for the passenger side and seating.
The orderly placement of the Veloster driving and convenience control systems is exceptional in its simplicity. In contrast to many vehicles we test, their intuitive placement made driving easy the first time behind the wheel.
The headroom of our Veloster with sunroof was right at 37-inches in the front row, which might be short for some. However, lower placement of the very supportive – leather seat surface- seating augmented by near 43-inch legroom and 56-inch shoulder room makes the front of the cabin very comfortable.

Seating is 6-way power adjustable (including lumbar) for the driver with a manual passenger seat with recline feature. Front seating is heated. Rear seating is 60/40-fold-down to augment the 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seating.
Other features include a Tilt and Telescoping Steering Wheel with Mounted Audio and Bluetooth Controls, center armrest with cupholders and storage, rear storage console with cupholders, Alloy Pedals, Automatic Climate Control with Auto Defogging, Remote Keyless Entry and Push Button Start.
We noted in particular the very bright 8-inch Heads Up Display that projects a comprehensive set of vehicle performance data standard. When in SPORT mode, the display features more specific performance data. It can be disengaged if so desired.

Powertrain
Our Veloster was powered by their Gamma 1.6L Turbo 4-cylinder engine mated to a very-well tuned 7-speed SHIFTRONIC Dual Clutch Automatic Transmission. For the uninitiated, a dual clutch automatic transmission enables fast direct gear connections with optimal torque transfer by having the next gear spooled up during shifts by the transmission.
This powertrain puts out 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Equipped with column mounted paddle shifters, the FWD coupe rockets around town or down the highway and everywhere in-between near effortlessly.

Adding to the fun is the standard Drive Mode Select system that offers NORMAL, SPORT and SMART modes. The driver can select the mode – that adjust the throttle, steering and transmission response points – for their performance preference.
We noted the SMART mode in particular, as it is not one you typically see. On the Veloster Ultimate, SMART ‘intelligently’ monitors a mode’s settings then adjusts them according to how the vehicle is being driven – providing a dynamically calculated range of response points during the course of the drive.

More fun was found in the Active Engine Sound (AES) system on our Veloster Ultimate. When engaged, the driver adjustable system enhances the powertrain’s sound character (intake and exhaust) in the cabin. And you guessed it, driving in SPORT we also chose to maximize the AES.
Since you will ask about fuel economy, in NORMAL, the Veloster Turbo Ultimate is rated 28/34 mpg city/highway and 30 mpg combined. We spent most of our week in SPORT, so we were a tad short of that.

Road Performance
The 2019 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate is a solidly credible sport coupe with its Sport tuned dynamic underpinnings.
Running on 18-inch alloy wheels mounted with P225/40 R18 all-season performance tires, its unibody construction and independent suspension (MacPherson strut with coil springs and gas filled twin tube shocks front and multi-link with hydraulic twin tube shocks rear) keeps the Veloster Turbo well planted on the road in all driving conditions.
Equipped with a Torque Vectoring Control and a quick ratio Motor Driven Steering Rack with revised steering calibration, its enhanced cornering dynamics deliver an aggressive (but well-mannered) drive experience.

Braking on the Veloster Turbo features an ABS four-wheel ventilated disc system with Brake Assist for maximum stopping power and Electronic Brake-force Distribution to balance the braking axle to axle for stop control.
Pushing the envelope in challenging road situations, we always felt comfortably in control of this Veloster Turbo Ultimate.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Our Turbo Ultimate featured an 8-inch High Resolution split function touchscreen with Navigation, AM/FM/HD/MP3 and SiriusXM with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Dual USB Charger and Smartphone and auxiliary input jacks.
Audio was provided through the 8-speakers of an Infiniti Premium Audio System with Clari-Fi and featuring an external amp and subwoofer.
Other features included Bluetooth Hands-free phone with steering wheel mounted controls, Eyes-Free Siri Integration, Qi Wireless Smartphone charging and Hyundai Blue Link Connected Services with its suite of safety, diagnostic, remote and guidance services.

The 2019 Veloster is equipped with standard Rearview Camera with Dynamic Guidelines, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, High Beam Assist and Driver Attention Warning.
Other safety features included Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, Rain Sensing Wipers, Hill Start Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning, Smart Cruise Control, Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning and Tire Pressure Monitoring.
