New Mojave Sand special edition Ram Power Wagon will sell fast – so act now

The folks at Ram trucks are hard at work year-around – developing and releasing special – often limited production – editions of their legendary trucks.  This week they are announcing that they have added a new limited-edition color package to their 2018 Ram Power Wagon.

The new Ram Power Wagon special edition – limited to 1,500 trucks – will feature the Mojave Sand exterior that has been available only on the Ram 1500 Rebel.  The fastest-moving color on the Ram Rebel, this is the first time Mojave Sand exterior paint has been available on a Ram Heavy Duty truck and will be exclusive to the Power Wagon.

To accompany the new color, new all-black wheels create a complete exterior design element. The limited-edition will also feature an all-black interior with Ram’s Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen

The Power Wagon Mojave Sand package adds the features of the optional Heavy-Duty Luxury Group, including LED bed lighting, overhead console, exterior power heated/fold-away mirrors with puddle lamps, heated seats and steering wheel, premium instrument cluster with 7-inch Driver Information Display and a universal garage door opener.

“The Ram Power Wagon is the most off-road capable production pickup in the market today and offering the new Mojave Sand special-edition will appeal to enthusiasts looking for a truck that stands above the crowd,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Ram Brand – FCA North America. “Power Wagon is extraordinarily competent off-road and provides both the towing and payload required in a heavy-duty truck.”

The Ram Power Wagon Mojave Sand limited edition is available in Crew Cab 4×4 at a starting MSRP of $54,830 plus $1,695 destination and will arrive in dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2018.

As we noted, we expect the Mojave Sand special-edition will have broad appeal given the popularity of the color on the Ram 1500 Rebel.  We would urge interested Power Wagon fans to talk to their dealers very soon to reserve one for themselves.

Ram Power Wagon for 2018

Power Wagon for 2018 features a bold blacked out grille with prominent Billet Silver “RAM” badge. Powertrain

Under the hood, Power Wagon is powered by a 6.4L HEMI V8 which kicks out 410 horsepower at 5,600 rpm with peak torque of 429 lb.-ft. at 4,000 rpm.  The 6.4L V8 is equipped with Fuel Saver cylinder deactivation for economy while its unique tuning enhances off-road performance by adjusting throttle, for example, when in 4LOW off-road gear range to increase rpm for additional power and control in hill descent and/or crawl modes.

The 6.4L HEMI is coupled to the 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission integrated with a part-time, manual engagement Borg-Warner 44-47 transfer case. Power is transferred through seriously hefty axles (9.25-inches front and 11.5-inches rear) with 4.10.1 ring and pinion ratio.  Rear axle shafts are upgraded to 38mm directly delivering to the 33-inch wheel/tire combinations.

Both axles have Tru-Lok electronic locking differentials and incorporate the Ram segment exclusive front axle disconnect system that automatically decouples the front drive-train components when appropriate such as highway travel, to improve fuel efficiency.

Mechanicals

The Ram Power Wagon comes standard with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratec LT285/70R17D OWL All-terrain tires designed to optimize performance off-road or on the highway.  A full –size spare tire is standard.

The suspension of the Power Wagon is purpose designed for off-road and includes Bilstein shocks, modified control arms and additional two-inches of lift. Its steel frame has main rails hydroformed from 50,000 PSI steel, uses eight separate cross-members with fully boxed rear rails and a rear-axle cross member. Wide front rails allow placement of suspension springs slightly outboard for roll stiffness.

At the front, Power Wagon uses an advanced three-link suspension for roll stiffness that is packaged with the Bilstein monotube shocks while the Ram Articulink design incorporates high movement joints at the control-arm-to-axle mount, allowing for additional flexibility and axle articulation.

An electronic disconnecting sway bar allows the AAM 9.25-inch front axle to move more independently of the truck’s frame. The “Smart Bar” is driver actuated in either 4HIGH or 4LOW drive speeds below 18 mph for added flex. It automatically reengages at speeds above 18 mph.

At the rear, the Power Wagon is fitted with an AAM 11.5-inch rear axle with a five-link coil rear suspension system with Bilstein monotube shocks and a Bilstein dampener linking the top of the rear axle to the frame for improved frame articulation and axle control when compared to standard heavy-duty leaf springs.

Extreme Off-Roading Metrics

The Power Wagon Mojave Sand – equipped with the standard 4.10 rear end – has a payload of 1,440 pounds with tow capacity of 9,790 pounds.

Ground clearance is 14.3-inches and Power Wagon can ford water up to 30-inches.

As an extreme off-roader, Power Wagon is protected with skid plates under the engine, transfer case and fuel tank.

Tow hooks are standard on Power Wagon, along with a WARN 12,000-pound power winch integrated into the front bumper – which is more than enough power to pull just about anything out of a hole, including the truck that was trying to pass you.
