The 2024 Mazda CX-5 offers eight trim levels – all AWD and starting at $29,300 – for small Crossover SUV buyers to consider. All are well equipped and a range of technology and driver convenience features plus a top package of safety elements.
With their top trim Turbo Signature priced at just MSRP $40,600, the CX-5 is very affordable.
AS TESTED
Mazda loaned us a 2024 Mazda CX-5 2.5L Turbo Signature for drive testing in and around Hill Country Texas.
Finished in Machine Gray Metallic, trim-level-exclusive Caturra Brown interior and riding on 19-inch wheels – it was a nice addition to our garage in The Hills.
It had an MSRP $40,600. Adding in Premium Paint charge and Delivery, this CX-5 2.5L Turbo Signature priced at $42,705.
Nice car, nice drive and good price too.
Let’s take a deeper look.
POWERTRAIN / MECHANICAL
Under the hood, our 2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature delivered all we looked for and maybe a bit more.
Powering our CX-5 was their very responsive SKYACTIV-G 2.5L Turbo 4-Cylinder mated to their SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-Speed Automatic Transmission w/Manual Mode. Interestingly its technology delivers defined variable horsepower and torque based on choice of fuel.
Choosing between 87 or 93 octane fuel grades it delivers 227/256 Horsepower with 310/320 lb.-ft. of torque – depending on fuel grade used.
All 2024 CX-5 models are equipped with their i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive w/G-Vectoring Control Plus and Mazda Intelligent iDrive (Mi-Drive.
Driver selectable drive modes include Normal, Sport & Off-Road. Normal is more than adequate for local and highway driving. But, as usual, we prefer Sport which delivers extra snap and control on the twisting roads in Hill Country Texas. We did not get a chance to test the Off-Road which monitors and adjust wheel traction as needed on off-road terrain.
Other features included Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control and Hill Launch Assist.
Performance is responsive with 0-60 acceleration just over 6-seconds and top speed of 142 mph. Fuel economy is 22/27/24 City/Highway/Combined.
Underneath, the Mazda CX-5 is fitted with Independent Front MacPherson struts up front and Independent Multi-Link suspension rear. Power assisted Rack and Pinion Steering w/speed sensing variable assist and Power Assisted Ventilated Discs front and Solid Disc rear.
Our CX-5 Turbo tows too – rated up to 2,000 pounds which will handle a small recreational vehicle or camping supplies trailer.
EXTERIOR
The 2024 CX-5 continues with their Mazda CX profile with a new design Gun Metal front grille, aluminum silver-finished front and rear bumper trim.
Clad in their premium Machine Gray Metallic paint with 19-inch alloy wheels w/Siver Metallic finish and bright chrome body accents – our CX-5 Turbo Signature was refined and handsome suggesting it might cost more than it did.
Features of note included Power Sliding Moon Roof w/Sunshade, Power Rear Liftgate w/Programmable Lift Height, Auto Leveling LED Headlights, LED Daytime Running Lights, LED Combination Taillights, Center High-Mount Brake Lights, Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers w/Wiper Deicer, Intermittent Rear Wiper, Heated Power Folding Side Mirrors and Silver Finish Large Dual Exhausts.
INTERIOR
The interior of our 2024 MazdaCX-5 Turbo Signature was trim and neat with the Caturra Brown Nappa Leather seating and Genuine Wood Grain Trims w/Bright Silver accents.
The cabin features illuminated entry and ambient lighting. It has very adequate head, leg and shoulder room both front and rear, but the knee space in second row is a little tight (2.7-inches) for taller passengers.
A bright 7-inch TFT LCD Instrument Cluster, a 10.25-inch Top-of-Dash Center Display and a carefully planned and placed group of dials switches give the driver good command and control.
Other features include Push-Button Start, Keyless Entry w/Remote Start, 8-Way Power Driver Seat, 6-Way Power Passenger Seat, Dual Zone Climate Control w/Rear Heater Ducts, Seats Heated and Ventilated front (3-Level) and Heated rear, Heated Steering Wheel w/Paddle Shifters, 40/20/40 Split Fold Down Rear Seating w/Reclining Seatback, Front and Rear Armrests w/Storage and Rear Window Defogger.
Under the variable height power cargo hatch is very reasonable cargo space (30 cubic feet second row up and 60 cubic feet down) with an LED area light.
MULTIMEDIA / INFOTAINMENT
The MAZDA CONNECT Infotainment System was standard on our CX-5. Elements included Mazda Navigation w/Off-Road Navigation, Wi-Fi, Remote Services (engine start etc.), Vehicle Status and more.
The 10.25-inch Full Color Center Display with Touchscreen and Multi-Function Commander Control and Voice Command Audio Menu is the primary focal service point for the Multimedia systems.
Audio entertainment was provided through a very nice Bose 10-Speaker Audio System. Some of the key features were SiriusXM w/Traffic and Travel Link, AM/FM/HD Radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto w/Wireless Integration, Speed Sensing Automatic Volume Control, Wireless Phone Charger, Bluetooth and USB Audio Input, three 12-volt Power Outlets, and Charging Ports front and rear.
SAFETY
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 is collision safety rated a IIHS Top Safety Pick.
Equipped with Mazda’s i-Activsense, our CX-5 array of Driving Safety and Convenience features included: Mazda Radar Cruise Control w/Stop and Go, Traffic Jam Assist, 360 Degree View Monitor, Advanced Smart City Brake Support w/Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Front Lighting w/High Beam Control, Driver Attention Alert, Active Driving (Head-Up) Display w/Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning w/Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support Rear, Front and Rear Parking Sensors and Tire Pressure Monitoring.
