The Honda Civic compact sedan steps out for 2022 with sportier styling outside and simpler yet distinctive styling inside. No longer stale and dated, the new Civic delivers fun-to-drive dynamics, advanced technologies, enhanced safety performance and overall tremendous value starting at MSRP $21,700 (Civic LX).

2022 Honda Civic 1.5T 4D Touring – as tested

We recently spent a week with the top-of-the line 2022 Civic 1.5T 4D Touring.

Priced at MSRP $28,300, it features leather seats, power front seats, Sirius XM radio, satellite-based navigation system and more all for under $30,000 delivered.

Priced the same as last year – Touring got a host of new or revised features to go with fresh styling inside and out.  Included are a new, larger 9-inch color touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a Civic-first Bose premium sound system, a new 10.2-inch all-digital and customizable instrument display, front and rear parking sensors, Sport driving mode, wireless smartphone charging and LED fog lights and more.

Packaged up with everything you need plus a lot of what you would want, our 2022 Civic 1.5T 4D Touring delivered into our garage for $29,295

Let’s take a look.

Exterior

The 2022 Honda Civic has a new look. Gone is the dated exterior styling and dull feature elements that had become the ‘signature’ look for Civic.

Civic for 2022 merits a second look with its lower and wider stance, cleaner with a lowered beltline that allows more glass for driver visibility.

Our Civic Touring included Power Moonroof w/Tilt Feature, Body Colored Power Side-Mirrors and Door Handles, LED Headlights with Auto-On/Off and Auto High Beam , LED Daytime Running Lights, LED Fog Lights, LED Side-Marker and Tail, Rain-Sensing Variable Intermittent Wipers and Chrome Exhaust Finisher.

Powertrain

The upgraded powertrain in our 2022 Honda Civic Touring was anchored by a spirited turbocharged In-Line DOHC Direct Injection 4 Cylinder engine. It produces a decent 180 hp @6000 rpm with 177 lb.-ft. of torque @1700-4500 rpm.

For 2022, the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) w/Paddle Shifters has been nicely tuned for the turbocharged engine to deliver responsive performance around town and on the highway.

For added performance and/or economy, the Civic Touring features three drive modes (ECON/NORMAL/SPORT) for the driver to choose from.  NORMAL was an adequate performer on a daily drive basis.

Fuel economy for this powertrain is 31/38/34 mpg city/highway/combined.  The 12.4-gallon fuel tank enables a 471-mile highway range.

Mechanical / Running Gear

We were impressed with the balanced yet nimble drive of our test Civic Touring. The 2022 Civic is notably a better handling sedan than before.

Honda has paid attention to making the suspension ‘work’ for the driver – sport tuning the MacPherson Strut front / Multi-Link Rear Suspension to deliver a responsive ride.

Meeting the challenges of the road nicely are 18-inch Alloy Wheels w/Shark Gray Inserts mounted with 235/40R18 all season tires.

We particularly liked the first application of the new Low-Speed Braking Control that provides a visual and audible alert when the vehicle is moving between approximately 1 and 6 mph and there is the possibility of a collision with a detected wall or other obstacle. It will apply the brakes if necessary.

Interior

We are seriously impressed with updated simple, clean and functional interior of the Touring.

The most impressive feature for us was the elegantly simple, yet ornately done honeycomb mesh accent trim across the dash.  Artfully concealing the AC vents, the mesh surface features retro-look toggles for adjusting direction of airflow.

We found the front seating roomy and comfortable. Leather-trimmed, both sides are power adjustable – 8-way for the driver and 4-way for the passenger.

Other notable elements included Dual Zone Automatic Climate Control w/Rear-Seat Heat Ducts, Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel w/Mounted Controls, Center Console w/Sliding Armrest, 10.2-inch Digital Driver Information Center and 60/40-Fold Down Rear Seat w/Armrest and cupholders.

Technology / Infotainment

Honda stepped up their technology offering in Civic for 2022. For the Touring – they checked pretty much all the boxes for a sedan at this price point.

New in Civic for 2022 is the Bose Premium Sound System w/12-speakers and Subwoofer.  The system is operated through a right-sized 9-inch Color Touchscreen with Customizable Settings, Smart Short Cuts and Volume Knob in lower left corner.  Yes, in the age of touchscreens, a real knob that you turn up and down!

Our Touring also featured HondaLink connectivity and Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System w/Voice Recognition, Turn-By-Turn Directions and Realtime Traffic

System features and elements included Sensitive Volume Compensation, SiriusXM and HD Radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration, Bluetooth HandsFree Link and Streaming Audio, SMS Text Message Function and Wireless Phone Charging plus a 12V Power Outlet front, 2.5A SmartPhone/Audio interface, and three 2.5A USB Charging Ports (1 front/2 rear).

Safety

Civic Sedan has earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The 2022 Civic Sedan is equipped standard with the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistive and safety technology.

Of particular note is the new Traffic Jam Assist feature that controls the Civic’s acceleration, braking and steering when creeping along on clogged roadways.  It even brings Civic to a complete stop and restarts it again as conditions dictate.

Other key elements include: Drive Attention Monitor, Rear Seat Reminder, Blind Spot Information System w/Cross Traffic Monitor, Parking Sensors (front/rear), Tire Pressure Monitoring, and Multi-Angle Rearview Camera w/Dynamic Guidelines.

2022 Honda Civic 4D Sedan Lineup

The all-new 2022 Honda Civic Sedan offers four trim levels.

The LX (MSRP $21,700) and Sport (MSRP $23,100) are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with a Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission (CVT).  The EX (MSRP ($24,700) and Touring (MSRP $28,300) are powered by a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a CVT tuned for the turbo power plant.

The Civic offering for 2021 will include a Hatchback, high-performance SI plus Type-R models all arriving later in the year.

One Last Thought

Honda offers a High Performance (HPD) appearance package on the Touring.  The motorsports-inspired package includes HPD-branded Decklid Spoiler, Emblem, Front Underbody Spoiler, Rear Underbody Spoiler and Side Underbody Spoilers.

If that is your ‘thing’ add it for $1,418.
