2020 Nissan Titan PRO-4X Crew Cab 4×4

When Nissan introduced the 2020 Titans last Fall, they proclaimed them to be ‘no compromise’ trucks offering the most standard power, safety and tech in their class.  We liked what we saw, but as always, proof of the claim would be in the drive.

Recently, Nissan provided Texas automotive media opportunity to experience the redesigned 2020 Nissan Titan trucks at the TexPlex Park – a motorsports challenge venue – near Dallas, Texas.  Featured vehicles were the off-road Titan PRO-4X 4×4 and luxury Titan XD Crew Cab Platinum Reserve 4×4.

Following a full day behind the wheel, they have met our expectations.  The 2020 Titans are really good trucks.

Following is our report on the 2020 Titan PRO-4X Crew Cab 4×4 from that drive.

PRO-4X Crew Cab

Quick summary: the refreshed PRO-4X offers improved styling with increased power, more safety and tech features plus performance for 2020.

For 2020, Nissan incorporated what they called a ‘Powerful Warrior’ theme in the exterior refresh of the Titan. The results are subtle, yet refreshing as they reflect the character of each model.  Refreshed features include uniquely designed grilles with interlocking frame and surrounds by model.

For the PRO-4X – a bold Black on Black grille and surround with Lava Red Nissan Badge suggests bold adventure.

In addition, it features a Lower Radiator Skid Plate with Satin Chrome Finisher and PRO-4X logo while the rear sports a Black Tailgate Finisher with PRO-4X logo.

Highlighting the styling are large LED headlights, ‘double boomerang’ LED daytime running lights and LED Fog Lights upfront with bold LED taillights at the rear.

The PRO-4X is further distinguished by its raised height with ground clearance of 10.6-inches front and 9.8-inches rear.  The bold look is accented by distinctively styled 18-inch aluminum alloy machined-over- painted finish wheels mounted with General 275/70R18 All-Terrain tires.

Inside, the PRO-4X interior offers bold first-class accommodations for an off-road truck.  Included are the awesome front and rear Nissan ‘Zero Gravity’ seating – buckets with integrated console up front and split-bench in the rear.

Lots of room, comfort and amenities like 10 cupholders and 4 bottle holders, seven overhead assist grips, USB connectivity, 12V and 110V power points make the PRO-4X a pleasure to both drive and ride.

Endurance 5.6L V8 Power and Drivetrain

Under the hood, every 2020 Titan is powered by the enhanced Nissan 5.6-liter Endurance V8 Direct Injection gas engine.  More powerful than before – it is rated at 400 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque making it best in class for both torque and horsepower.

A new 9-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous 7-speed.   The expanded gear ratios deliver smoother shifting, faster acceleration and improved towing and off-road performance from the enhanced power plant.

In challenging terrain circumstances, the PRO-4X is equipped with part-time 4×4 transfer case and Electronic Locking Rear Differential to enable directed traction to axle/wheel combination as needed.

For added performance control, the PRO-4X comes with Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Sway Control and – for helping others who get into trouble – Tow Hooks.

Underneath, it features double-wishbone front and multi-leaf solid axle rear – both with Bilstein shocks.  and features vented disc brakes and Rack-and-pinion variable speed steering and all-wheel vented disc brakes contribute to the PRO-4X running really smooth on the  highway and ruggedly capable in the outback.

Putting it to the test, on the highway, we ran the Titan PRO-4X from full stop to 75mph – pedal to the floor – with nary a ‘blip’ in the acceleration as it moved up the gear ladder.

We then checked its acceleration response when cruising the highway.  Again, hitting the throttle at full pedal, the PRO-4X instantly leaped forward from 60 to 75 without hesitation.

Off-road – traversing the trails of the back-country section at the TexPlex Park motorsports challenge venue near Dallas – the PRO-4X power/drive train handled the hills climb and descents, muddy and sandy trails, rock obstacles and waterfilled potholes with ease.

Technology and Infotainment

The Titan PRO-4X include a 7-inch programmable driver information display in the instrument cluster. The center stack is fitted with a 9-inch WXGA touchscreen featuring Nissan Connect w/Navigation, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link, Bluetooth Hands-free and Streaming Audio and more.

Features of note include Nissan’s next-generation connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an internal Wi-Fi Router that allows up to six devices to be connected to the internet with (up to) 45Mbps speed.

Plus, for outback adventuring, PRO-4X comes with a menu driven Advanced Drive-Assist Display with Off-Road Indicator.

How Much?

Pre-production models do not come with pricing detail, so we estimated a delivered price using the consumer website ‘Build It’ feature.

Equipped as shown above, we figured the price of this 2020 Nissan Titan Crew Cab PRO-4X to be $58,455.

A lot of money, yes – but for a whole lot of truck like this one?  You bet!

And, on top of all of that, the 2020 Titan is covered by Nissan’s “America’s Best Truck Warranty” – featuring bumper-to-bumper coverage of 5-years/100,000-miles, whichever comes first.
