2020 Nissan Titan XD Crew Cab 4×4 Platinum Reserve
The 2020 Nissan Titan XD Crew Cab is built to tow and haul. The fact that it does so with healthy helping of style, technology, convenience, comfort and the luxury of the Platinum Reserve trim – is just frosting on the cake.
Nissan does not offer a ‘heavy duty’ pickup exactly. But they do offer Titan XD – a more capable truck that tows and hauls the bigger loads like destination travel trailers.
Larger, stronger and tougher than the ‘regular’ full-size Titan – it fits the consumer need for heavy-duty pickup truck performance without the heavy-duty size and price.
The Titan XD, weight rated at 8,650 pounds (GVWR), will tow up to 11,000 pounds with its integrated gooseneck hitch system. On examination, that is pretty much what most folks will ever need.
2020 Nissan Titan XD Platinum Reserve as tested
A couple weeks ago, Nissan invited us to road test their Top-of-the-Line Titan XD Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4×4 model at and on the highways around the TexPlex Park motorsports venue near Dallas, Texas.
Not messing around with one of those ‘lightweight’ tests, our Titan XD was hooked to a 28-foot Keystone RV ‘Hideout’ model trailer. Equipped with multiple ‘push-outs’ able to take a family of eight anywhere, it weighed in at over 9,500 pounds.
It was a piece of cake. So easy that my drive partner commented that they kept having to check the mirrors to confirm the ‘Hideout’ was still back there. During that couple of hours, we travelled freeways, state highways, county roads and township streets easily.
In just a few words, the handling under load was exceptional. Our Titan XD Platinum Reserve delivered a notably quiet and comfortable ride. Its acceleration, smooth shifts, braking, turning and lane changing were above our expectations for the size of this tow.
Power and Drivetrain
For 2020, Nissan dropped the Cummins Diesel option for XD as it did not sell. Instead, they tweaked the engineering of their 5.6L Endurance V8 Direct Injection Gas engine to give it more power. They boosted performance to 400 horsepower with 413 lb.-ft of torque. Now delivering up to 11,000 pounds of towing capacity – it turns out they did not need the diesel after all.
A new 9-speed automatic transmission (with Tow/Haul Mode) replaces the previous 7- speed transmission.
The wider range of gears distribute horsepower and torque more efficiently under load and especially when towing a load from standing start to cruising speeds.
Running Gear / Mechanical
The Titan XD is built on a frame and chassis that is stronger – engineered for the load. The XD has a 151.6-inch wheelbase – 15-inches longer than regular Titan allowing which accommodates the larger 6.5-foot cargo bed.
The frame is a fully boxed and full-length ladder that is extensively reinforced and strengthened for the larger Titan XD. It provides added stiffness, vertical and lateral bending, and torsional rigidity.
To optimize tow capacity, the frame design facilitates attachment of an integrated gooseneck trailer hitch system with 7-pin in-bed wiring harness.
Suspension is heavy duty double-wishbone up front and multi-leaf w/solid axle rear. Steering is recirculating ball, speed-sensitive and power assisted.
Braking is provided by a more robust 4-wheel disc system with 14.2 x 1.5-inch front/14.4 x 1.2- inch rear ventilated discs with hydraulic power assist.
Wheels are 20-inch Machined Alloy mounted with Continental LT265/60R20 tires that delivered a smooth ride on all of the road surfaces travelled.
Towing Made Easy
Boasting all of the power and strength necessary for big load towing and hauling, the 2020 Titan XD is also loaded with features that make the trailering experience easy.
They include Trailer Sway Control, Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Tow-Haul Mode (transmission) w/Downhill Speed Control, Hill Start Assist, Trailer Brake Check System, Intelligent Around View Monitor, Rear View Monitor w/Trailer Guides, Extendable/Folding Power Heated Towing Mirrors, Tow Hooks and Skid Plates under the oil pan and fuel tank.
Other features making the trailer towing experience easier include the Spray-on Bedliner, Overhead LED Cargo Bed Lights, LED Tailgate Area Lighting, LED Under-Rail Bed Lighting, Bed-Mounted 120V AC Power Outlet, Running Boards and Rear Bumper Step Assist.
The Titan XD features standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 with advanced driver-assist systems. Included are: Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist and class-exclusive Rear Automatic Braking.
Other elements include the standard Nissan Rear Door Alert and Tire Pressure Monitoring, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Around View Monitor, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Driver Alertness and Traffic Sign Recognition.
The 2020 Titan is covered by Nissan’s “America’s Best Truck Warranty” – bumper-to-bumper coverage of 5-years/100,000-miles, whichever comes first.
As we noted, our Titan XD Platinum Reserve 4×4 – as tested – was a pre-production model.
Such models may or may not be an exact copy of a production build. Therefore, a pricing sheet is not provided. As we did on our earlier report on the Titan PRO-4X, we estimated the delivered price for this truck to be about $66,000.
As for the trailer – you are on your own here. The Hideout 28-foot trailer we towed is from Livingston RV division of Thor Industries. Depending on the number of pushouts and other features selected, their literature suggests pricing in the $35,000-$40,000 range.
The 2020 Nissan Titan XD Lineup
