Carl Lally, Senior Manager Ram 1500 Brand Marketing, with Truck of Texas trophy

The 2020 Ram 1500 earned the prestigious Truck of Texas honor at the annual Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) Texas Truck Rodeo held in October.  The announcement of the award and presentation of the coveted trophy was made at the San Antonio Auto and Truck Show opening gala on November 20, 2019.

Ram Truck won every category the brand entered, securing eight awards, the most of any brand at the event. In addition to Jeep Wrangler winning Off-Road SUV of Texas for the 10th year in a row, the new 2020 Jeep Gladiator won Mid-Size Truck of Texas, and the Jeep Renegade captured Sub-compact SUV of Texas.

“The 2020 Ram 1500 once again captured the hearts of our members this year and has earned our highest honor as the 2020 Truck of Texas,” said Michael Marrs, President of TAWA. “It continues to be the benchmark for capability, technology and the attention to detail sets it apart from the rest of the segment.”

This year’s Rodeo – held at Star Hill Ranch in Bee Cave, Texas – featured both on- and light off-road driving opportunities. TAWA members cast their votes after two days of on- and off-road vehicle evaluations. Consideration is given to everything from exterior/interior styling and off-road capability to the entrant’s overall utility, value and performance.

More than 50 pickups trucks, SUVs and commercial vehicles were entered in the competition this year with near 60 TAWA members attending.

About Texas Auto Writers Association Events

TAWA Texas Truck Rodeo (Fall)

The Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) was founded in 1987 by automotive journalists wanting to provide an avenue for professional growth, development and networking in the southern region.  These professionals sought to create an automotive event unique to Texas – thus was born the Texas Truck Rodeo.

Held annually since 1993, the Texas Truck Rodeo competition for trucks and SUVs has been held in cities and towns like San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Granbury, Spring Branch and now in Bee Cave.

TAWA Texas Auto Roundup (Spring)

In 2003 TAWA create a companion Spring event for sedans, sports cars and other vehicle types not eligible for the Truck Rodeo. The vehicles compete in several categories all looking to be named as the Car of Texas, CUV of Texas, Family Car of Texas or Performance Car of Texas.

Originally known as the TAWA Spring Challenge, it was originally held in Texas Hill Country near Austin.  Changing the name to Texas Auto Roundup, the event was then held for several years at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.  More recently, it has been held at the Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas.
