2020 Ram Limited Crew Cab with Adaptive Headlamps and Automatic Emergency Braking

Ram brand announced last month that the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab and certain 2019 Crew Cab models are the first full-size pickups earning a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating under current Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) guidelines.

A TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating is the highest awarded by IIHS.

Though the news was not reported broadly, this is a big deal folks. For the first time, a pickup truck (Ram 1500) earns the latest – toughest to get – top safety rating from IIHS.

In order to qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn ‘good’ ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The vehicle must also earn an ‘advanced’ or ‘superior’ rating for front crash prevention.

Ram 1500 trucks have accomplished these to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK rating which is pretty good – but not good enough for the Ram brand team. To become a ‘best of the best’ vehicle with a PLUS (+) rating, they also needed to attain a ‘good’ headlight rating.

Headlights are the newest category measured by IIHS – in recognition of the importance of the driver being able to see the road clearly (directly ahead and along the periphery) during dusk to dawn hours or seriously inclement weather.

Here in Texas, we have miles and miles of ranch, farm and country roads – along with inclement weather conditions – that are challenging enough to drive safely during daylight hours. Take away the daylight or add inclement weather and the safety risk grows exponentially.

Stepping up to that challenge, Ram now equips their full-size trucks with an adaptive headlight system that makes that driving a lot safer. Trucks produced since May 2019 – equipped with adaptive LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist – now boast that coveted TOP SAFETY PICK + rating.

The Details

The 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating applies to 2020 Ram 1500 pickups and 2019 trucks produced after May of this year – when equipped with adaptive LED projector headlamps that have high-beam assist and Ram’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology, Forward Collision Mitigation.

Ram truck’s patented front frame-rails are splayed to better manage crash energy in certain types of frontal collisions. Of the six crashworthiness evaluations conducted by the IIHS, three simulate frontal impacts the Ram 1500 recorded ‘good’ results in each, the highest possible rating. Outcomes were the same in the three remaining crashworthiness tests, which inflict damage consistent with a side impact, rear impact and a rollover.

Forward Collision Mitigation in the Ram 1500 earned a ‘superior’ rating from IIHS on vehicles equipped with the Integrated Radar Camera Module (IRCM)) to accommodate Forward Collision Mitigation. The optional feature boasts sensor-fusion technology, which blends camera capability with radar detection to determine when an impact is imminent.

The system initially warns the driver to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver does not act in a timely manner, the system may activate the vehicle’s brakes if collision risk remains.

A ‘good’ rating in headlamp testing is the latest IIHS requirement to earn Top Safety Pick+.
