Ram adds Multifunction Tailgate option for 2019 Ram 1500 pickups
Ram Truck unveiled a new unique Multifunction Tailgate option for their award-winning 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck today at the Chicago Auto Show.
The Ram 1500 Multifunction Tailgate feature is unique among all pickups, and offers customers cargo-access flexibility without compromise says Ram.
While retaining the capabilities of a fully-dampened, drop-down tailgate with remote release options, the Ram Multifunction Tailgate now adds a first-of-its kind 60-40 split, swing-away functionality.

The Ram Multifunction Tailgate’s dual side-hinged tailgate doors further enhance the 1500’s bed access and utility. Independent opening features make curbside loading easier. Being able to access the bed closer to the bumper makes stepping up easier; makes loading bulky item easier; makes unloading and washout easier.
Four configurations are provided by the Ram Multifunction Tailgate: open flat, open left door only, open right door only and open both doors. Each door swings open 88 degrees, with access further enhanced via an optional retractable MOPAR Center Step.

We also noted that the Ram Multifunction Tailgate can allow truck loading directly from loading docks onto the cargo bed without having to travel across a lowered tailgate. In addition, forklift loading of pallets is easier and safer using the Multifunction Tailgate. With the gate doors swung away, the forklift can load the pallet onto the bed directly – no push or slide needed.

When and How Much?
The Multifunction Tailgate will be available across all seven 2019 Ram 1500 models and will reach dealerships in the second quarter of 2019.
Since you will ask, the Multifunction Tailgate (spray-in bedliner included) is factory order only. It requires a different cargo bed and sidewall construction configuration than a standard tailgate truck so cannot be retrofitted to existing trucks. The MSRP is $995.
The MOPAR Center Step is a dealer installed item. Its MSRP is $295.

RamBox Cargo System
Further enhancing the cargo capability of the Ram 1500 is the rugged RamBox cargo management system. It is available with – or without – the Multifunction Tailgate.
The RamBox system is a set of versatile, weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage bins built into the bed rails. The RamBox bins also feature a handy115-volt, 400-watt outlet for work or play.
Available with RamBox is a pickup bed divider/two-foot bed extender and cargo rail system with four sliding, adjustable cleats to handle multiple sized or oddly configured cargo items easily.

Ram also points out that the 2019 Ram 1500 pickup – with its larger rear seat area in the Crew Cab than their competition – can be configured into a larger true flat-load floor.
