The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock pays homage to the original Dodge Warlock pickup. The 1978 Dodge Warlock was a member of what were known as Dodge Adult Toys – 1970’s era trucks that offered customers of the day well-equipped, factory-customized trucks with unique style, capability and value.
“The Ram 1500 Classic Warlock is proof positive that value never goes out of style,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand, FCA. “With its sinister monochromatic exterior, award-winning interior and great price, this mean machine is certain to resonate positively with consumers.”

1978 to 2019 – Some things never change
Ram Truck today not only delivers what many consider today as the most advanced full-size pickup available in the market, but also excels at creating and offering unique and appealing special editions throughout the year.
Investigating the history of the Dodge Warlock – it was intriguing to find how forward the Chrysler truck customer focus was more than 40 years ago. In many ways it explains their success today.
For example, were you aware that back in 1978, Ram (then Dodge Truck) was at the forefront of recognizing trucks to be more than just a commercial product and that women would become a key customer for their trucks?
A read of their September 1977 press release for the 1978 Dodge Warlock reveals that the Dodge Warlock was part of a ‘fun truck’ program derived for the Dodge truck line, called Dodge Adult Toys. They included a Street Van, Warlock Macho Power Wagon and Macho Ramcharger 4x4 Dodge.
The then manager of truck sales for Chrysler Corporation – Al D. Imber – said that the Dodge Warlock for 1978 (the second Adult Toy) was designed to be a personalized pickup, complete with bucket seats, decorative striping, fancy wheels and striping and real oak sideboards.
He followed with remarks that trucks were no longer the world of men and boys only. That more women were finding trucks to be comfortable and easy to drive in traffic, further that trucks (for both) filled more than a basic transportation need and that the Dodge Adult Toys filled an emerging need for ‘fun trucking’.
“The truck market in the last few years had gone from a commercially oriented market to almost 50 percent personal use. We feel our Adult Toys give us an advantage in this market.”
Imber continued, “Today’s buyer is looking at trucks differently than the buyer did a few years ago. Today’s buyer is not looking for a motorized wheelbarrow”, he said. He added that the new truck buyer and user is attracted to the outdoors, and the fun of backpacking, camping, skiing, snowmobiling and touring.
“People make a personal statement about themselves with the vehicle they drive. And we think our Adult Toys help them make that statement – fun trucking,” he said.
Ram Truck (today) continues that fun truck approach – for everyone – with the complete Ram 1500 lineup and, in particular, their many Special Editions. The new 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock would have made Al D. Imber proud.
