The Legend of the Dodge Brothers is alive and well in Detroit…

The ultimate definition of the muscle car is one that can be a daily driver and grocery getter during the week and then on the weekend…time for some power to the pavement.  This seems to be the Dodge creed for the last few years as the interest in muscle cars has grown.

Dodge has a solid heritage to build on with the mid-60’s through the early 1970s being the climax of the initial muscle car era.  In particular, the Dodge Charger and Challenger are leading the pack.  Both models are available in the Hellcat trim where 707-horsepower in a very drivable street car capable of 20+mpg on the highway set the standard.   A very nice standard, but not settling for standard, Dodge next rolled out the Demon doing wheelies as a street legal car…not necessarily street trim, but at least street legal.

Once again, being the standard is not enough in the Dodge house.  Three new Challengers models were introduced at the FCA Chelsea Proving grounds during a media event.   The one that seemed to start the new level of performance, the Hellcat with 707 horsepower gets a new look with the dual snorkel hood scoops that were a key design feature on the late ‘60s early ’70 model performance cars.  But wait, there is more!  The new hood scoops add 18% more air flow which translates into more horsepower giving the 2019 Dodge Hellcat 717 horsepower to work with.

The Scat Pack option is the leader of the pack in regard to sales providing 20% of the performance sales and the new wide body model is expected to continue that trend.  The wide body reduces quarter mile time by 2-tenths with the 392 engine package putting it solidly in the 10-second street car category.

The newest models is the Challenger Hellcat Redeye, providing 797 horsepower and 707-lb. ft. of torque transmitting through a 8-speed automatic equating to a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds.  Quarter mile in 10.8 at 130 mph…come kinda’ quick!
