2021 Toyota Family of Trail Special Edition Models
Toyota trucks – Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner – are perennial favorites of serious adventurers who love the outdoors. So much so, these Toyota trucks regularly lead their segments as buyers – who love camping, fishing, and hiking – chose them year after year.
In response to that support from those outdoor buyers, Toyota is adding special features to the 2021 models to enhance the buyer adventuring experience.
Coming this summer are a special run of the 2021 Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner as Trail Special Editions. All will add emphasis on extra storage and convenience, with unique styling and exclusive content added for good measure on a truck by truck basis.
Considered Special Editions rather than limited editions, the production volume will be low. Toyota is planning to equip just 7,000 Tacomas, 5,000 Tundras and 4,000 4Runners as Trail Editions. The early buyer will have the best selection given the low production.
Trail Edition Detail
All three 2021 Toyota Trail editions are based on their respective versatile SR5 grade trim levels to deliver high value. Each offers the choice of 2WD or 4WD.
All Trail editions feature black exterior badging, plus black seating with tan stitching. In all versions, standard all- weather floor liners help catch the outdoor elements that come in on occupants’ feet.
Trail color choices include Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black, and Super White. From there, each Trail model has its own unique set of Trail upgrades.
Shown below (Left to Right) are Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner in the Cement exterior color
The Tacoma Trail – built on the SR5 Double Cab – features a set of Dark Gray 16-inch TRD Off-Road wheels with Kevlar All- Terrain tires. The grille, borrowed from the Tacoma Limited, adds a custom touch.
In the bed, a 115-volt power outlet adds versatility, that includes lockable insulated bed storage on the driver side in order to double as a cooler.
The Tundra Trail is a SR5 Crew Max with the SR5 Upgrade Package that includes a larger fuel tank, front bucket seats with driver’s power lumbar support, front center console, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, three front cupholders, and an anti-theft system with alarm and engine immobilizer.
The Tundra Trail also features the bold chrome grille from the top-of-line Tundra 1794 Edition with color-keyed surround, plus special-edition wheels. Tundra Trail – like the Tacoma Trail, also is fitted with lockable bed storage with insulation on the driver side to work as a cooler.
The 4Runner Trail comes ready to carry campers into the woods with dark gray TRD Off-Road wheels, and a Yakima LoadWarrior rooftop cargo basket for added utility and gear-hauling capability
Inside, 4Runner boasts a custom 40-quart cooler and sliding cargo tray that is custom-made for Toyota.
The 4Runner Trail’s cooler is very versatile piece of equipment and features:
- Lockable Lid
- Flat top to allow use as table top or outdoor seat
- Freezer-grade air-tight gasket to keep ice frozen up to seven days
- Tie-down straps and special brackets on sliding rear cargo tray that secures cooler
- Two heavy-duty latches with integrated bottle openers

The cooler comes color-keyed with Cement or Army Green exterior 4Runner colors, while on Super White and Midnight Black 4Runner Trails the cooler is Cement.
