2020 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Premium in Renaissance Red 02

The iconic Toyota Supra is back and ready to run the road or the track, comfortably and fast.

We recently had the opportunity to drive a new – fifth generation – 2020 Toyota GR 3.0 Premium for a full week all around Central Texas.  We drove it to the store, to the mall and on the highway for as many hours and miles we could get in.

Everywhere we went, we noted the second glances and admiring looks from others.  We found, as with us, the mystique of the iconic Toyota Supra did not go away with the demise of the fourth generation (2002) – it just went quiet until Supra returned.  Now it is back.

The best thing we can say is that – at the end of that week, we wished we had just one more week.  We had more miles to go in this latest generation of the iconic Toyota Supra.  We could have used more smiles.

2020 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Premium – As Tested

Our GR Supra 3.0 Premium came in their vibrant Renaissance Red 2.0 with a Black interior.

Its ‘double-bubble’ roof, bold front grille, sleek coupe lines, arching rear spoiler and active dual exhausts give it an aerodynamically efficient unique look.

Adding the 19-inch Forged Aluminum Twin 5-Spoke Wheels mounted w/Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tires (255/35R19 front and 275/35/R19 rear) Super plus Red Brake Calipers – tells us this new Supra GR is truly special.

OF NOTE is the unique White LED Backup Lamp located in the center of the lower bumper

Under the hood, Supra GR is powered by a 3.0L in-line direct injection six-cylinder engine w/twin-scroll turbocharger and variable valve timing.  The power plant delivers 335 horsepower w/365 lb.-ft. of torque through a performance engineered 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Maximizing torque at lower engine speeds and equipped with an Active Rear Sport Differential – Supra GR is powered to fly.

Supra GR is fitted with Drive Mode Select to further enhance performance.  Settings are Normal and Sport.  In addition, its Vehicle Stability Control System has a Traction Control setting for additional performance.

But Supra is not done yet.  A Launch Control feature (Sport Drive Mode or Traction Stability Control Mode) when selected, optimizes standing start acceleration.  Using it, Toyota says, 0-60 mph time is just over 4-seconds.  For those who ask, top speed is electronically limited at 155 mph.

OF NOTE: For those who like the sound of performance, Supra GR features a finely tuned Active Exhaust that adds just the right level of note (‘rumble’) – both accelerating and decelerating – that does quicken the pulse.

Loaded with power, Supra GR is also well set up underneath to challenge the road.

Features include an Adaptive Variable Sport Suspension w/double Joint MacPherson Struts front and Five-Arm Multi-link rear with Sport Calibrated Electric Power Steering.

Braking is provided by Brembo (Red Calipers) 13.7-inch ventilated discs w/4-piston fixed caliper front and 13.6-inch ventilated disc w/single piston floating caliper rear.

The Active Differential further enhances the road and track handling by automatically controlling lateral torque distribution between the rear wheels.  When performance driving, the 0-100 percent flexing distribution of torque enhances cornering both when accelerating and braking in corners.

Lastly, where the rubber meets the road, Supra GR uses wider wheels and tires up front to enhance grab and grip and compliment the near perfect 50/50 front to rear weight balance.

Supra GR features a roomy cabin designed nicely for two – both comfort and convenience.

In particular we noted the sport styled seating with black leather trim and the carbon fibre cabin trim accents around the cabin.

The headroom in Supra GR is a bit short for tall folks (38.3-inches), but the 14-way adjustable driver seat offers variable seat settings that mitigate the headroom challenge.

With well-placed seat bolstering and sport knee cushions, seat position is comfortable with good driver visibility and control.  Leg room is more than adequate with good shoulder room.

Other elements of note include a Full Color Head Up Display w/Speed Limit info, large Single Meter Digital Display that incorporates and consolidates all the information a driver needs for daily or performance driving, Dual Automatic Climate Control and Sport Pedals.

Technology and Infotainment

Technology and infotainment elements in the Supra GR are enough, but not too much for this two-seater.

Mounted at the top of the stack is an 8.8-inch Wide-Format LCD Touchscreen w/Navigation that brightly displays information needed.

Audio is provided by a JBL 500-watt 12-speaker Audio System that features Apple CarPlay compatibility, SiriusXM and AM/FM radio, Handsfree Bluetooth Streaming and more.

A console-mounted Rotary Touch Pad Controller gives the driver single touch control of all the elements.

Other features include Wireless Smartphone Charging, Smart Key w/Smart Entry, Push Button Start and Supra Connected Telematics Services.

Safety & Convenience

The GR Supra does not lack for standard safety and convenience features.  They include Six-Lens LED Headlamps w/Auto On-Off and Automatic High Beams, LED Rear Combination Lamps, Rear Camera, Automatic Rain Sensing Wipers, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking w/Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning w/Steering Assist and Electronic Parking Brake

Our Supra Premium added the Drive Assist Package ($1,195) with Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Parking sensors w/Emergency Brake Function.
