Rugged Power and Drive Train
Though we focus first on the off-road rugged capability of the power plant and drive train, it is important to note that all of that capability also makes every day driving, when road or weather conditions challenge, easier and safer.
Land Cruiser is powered by a 5.7L DOHC V8 engine producing 381 horsepower with 401 lb.-ft. of torque. The 8-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission with Intelligence ((ECT-i) has a manual control feature for additional control navigating steep inclines.

The full-time 4WD system uses a Torsen limited-slip locking differential to distribute torque 40:60 front to rear. It adjusts torque delivery to wheels with the best grip automatically as needed using Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) to adjust throttle and braking to control wheel spin.
The 2-speed transfer case (HI/LO), in LO setting, uses CRAWL Control to manage engine speed output and braking in both forward and reverse. It is assisted by a driver controlled Multi-Terrain Select system that offers five drive setting choices for the driver to use depending on terrain conditions. Settings include a unique MOGUL setting for crawling over extremely uneven terrain.
Land Cruiser also has Hill-Start Assist and Downhill Assist Control and features adaptable steering in two forms. Normal is power-assisted, vehicle speed-sensing, variable gear ratio rack and pinion steering. An Off-Road Turn Assist (available off-road) that tightens the turning radius by applying brake pressure to the inside rear wheel – pivoting the vehicle in the turn direction.

Additional driver assistance is provided by the Multi-Terrain Monitor with selectable front and rear views along with near 360-degree visibility and 5-second front undercarriage projected path video playback.
Aluminum Alloy wheels are 18-inch mounted with P285 /60R18 mud and snow tires. A full-size spare is included. Notably the Tire Pressure Monitoring system monitors all five tires at all times so that an adventuring family is not stranded finding their spare tire is unexpectedly flat when needed.

Off-Road Adventure Capable
The rugged capability of the Land Cruiser starts with its high-strength steel body-on-frame construction, independent double wishbone suspension with coil springs and stabilizer at the front and 4-link suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar at the rear. Flexibility of the chassis when off-road is aided by the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that adjusts the resistance of the stabilizer bars as needed in response to the terrain conditions.
Braking is a Multi-Terrain 4-wheel anti-lock brake system with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist featuring large ventilated disc brakes – 13.9-inch/13.6-inch front/rear.

For those more challenging backcountry adventure terrain conditions, Land Cruiser will ford water up to near 28-inches. Ground clearance is 8.9-inches and is ‘armored’ underneath with steel skid plates protecting front suspension, radiator, fuel tank and transfer case. And, just in case, for hauling someone else out of trouble, it has a tow hooks front and rear.
If you want to bring along some toys or other gear on your adventures, Land Cruiser tows too. The 5.7L V8 delivers 90 percent of maximum torque at just 2,200 rpm. Equipped with an engine oil cooler plus all connections and a harness for a Trailer-Brake Controller, it can tow up to 8,100 pounds safely with Trailer Sway Control supported by Vehicle Stability Control.

Inside, there is plenty of room for 8 passengers and lots of gear. Semi-aniline perforated leather front seats are heated and ventilated with 10-way driver and 8-way power passenger power adjust. The center console is bi-level center with a cooler box and second row vents. Leather trimmed second row seating is 40/20/40 with heated outboard positions and have a recline, fold and tumble feature. They also slide fore and aft 4.1-inches for additional legroom and to provide easier access to the third row. Third row is 50/50 split with fold away feature.

It included the only option package offered – a Rear-Seat Entertainment System ($2,220) complete with two individual 11.6-inch display screens, RCA jacks, HDMI input, remote control and two wireless headphones.
