2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road in Lunar Rock / Ice Edge Color Combination
The new 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, announced earlier this year, is now available at dealerships. Having just spent a week in one, we can tell you it is well worth consideration by those who consider the outdoors their second home.
Outfitted with a full array of Toyota Racing Development (TRD) engineering and design features, the TRD Off-Road offers greater trail-driving and desert running capability than its sibling, the RAV4 Adventure.
For a couple of thousand dollars more than Adventure, the additional overland trekking capability of TRD Off-Road adds a new dimension to outdoor adventuring for RAV4 owners.
2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road
Based on the outback-trekking Adventure, the 2020 TRD Off-Road shares many of the same features. Elements like the high-rise roof fails, large over-fenders, aggressive bumper, grille designs and fog light surrounds and the power and drivetrain are all common to both.
Power and Drive Train
Under the hood, the 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road is powered by the same Toyota Dynamic Force 2.5L 203 horsepower four cylinder delivering 184 lb.-ft. of torque through a Direct Shift 8-speed Electronically Controlled automatic transmission. The transmission features Sport, Normal and Eco modes.
The standard Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive (AWD) directs up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels, distributing left or right to the wheel with traction. The system features automatic Driveline Disconnect to enhance fuel efficiency when AWD is not needed.
Adding to the off-road and desert running capability is the standard Multi-Terrain Select system allowing the driver to maximize traction to conditions.
There is Mud & Sand mode for beach or desert running, Rock & Dirt for back country trails and Snow for winter conditions. Supporting features include Hill Start Assist and Downhill Assist Control.
The Multi-Information Display (MID) on RAV4 Off-Road Shows the drive torque allocation and slip control information to assist in mode management by the driver.
And, if it is not enough to just get you there, you can bring stuff along. The 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road, with Trailer Sway Control, tows ups to 3,500 pounds such as a small trailer loaded with off-road recreational gear.
Underneath TRD Off-Road
Like Adventure, the RAV4 Off-Road, has 8.6-inches of ground clearance. Both are built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) platform, but there is a difference.
The TRD Off-Road features suspension, wheels and tires designed and engineered by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) expressly for trail driving and desert racing.
The TRD-tuned suspension features unique MacPherson Struts w/red-painted coil springs and bump stops front. At the rear, the TRD-tuned Multi-link rear suspension with twin tube shocks, also features red-painted coil springs and bump stops.
The 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road is fitted with exclusive flow-formed 18×7-inch matte black TRD engineered alloy wheels mounted with Falken Wildpeak 225/60R18 All-Terrain tires. The tires feature unique tread design with a rugged shoulder for enhanced grip.
Designed for rock and mud trails including deep snow, their open shoulder grooving easily tosses off debris, mud and snow.
OF NOTE: The enhanced shoulder on the Falken Wildpeak tires grabbed rock surfaces very well during our hill climb testing. Sorry, no mud to test. We are in a drought here.
Other TRD Elements
Specific TRD elements on the exterior include dark gray front and rear lower fascias, Multi-LED headlights, LED Daytime Running Lights, Integrated LED Fog Lights with Black Trim, LED Tail and Stop Lights and a distinctive split-bar front grille.
The front bumper is color-keyed upper and Black lower. The rear bumper is Black with a Magnetic Gray insert. The unique Raised Roof Rails and Over-fenders are also Black.
And, of course, there is the Black RAV4 and TRD Off-Road badging.
The cabin of the RAV4 Off-Road features black SofTex trimmed seats with TRD Red stitching and TRD embossed seat inserts and seat headrests. Other interior surfaces are also black in both soft and semisoft materials featuring TRD Red accents as well.
Finally, the interior trim includes a set of TRD All Weather Floor Mats and a Cargo Liner.
As Built: Our Test RAV4 TRD Off-Road
The 2020 RAV 4 TRD Off-Road has an MSRP of $35,180 before packages and options. As noted above, it comes well equipped as the newest member of the TRD Off-Road SUV and truck family.
But there is more – a lot more.
Our test RAV4 TRD Off-Road came in the really sharp (optional) two-tone Lunar Rock exterior with Ice Rock contrasting roof.
RAV4 elements standard or optional also on our test vehicle included Power tilt/side Moonroof, Height adjustable Power Liftgate, Dual Zone Auto AC w/Rear Vents, Smart Key System w/Push Button Start, Remote Liftgate operation and Approach Illumination.
Infotainment elements included Handsfree Smartphone and Music Streaming by Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Amazon Audio Plus and SiriusXM. Supporting handheld or other devices are five USB Ports, two 12V/120W power points and one 120V/100W AC power outlet.
Completing our RAV4 TRD Off-Road were the following packages:
Premium Audio, Dynamic Navigation and JBL Package managed through an 8-inch touchscreen. Features include 11 JBL Speakers and Subwoofer, Dynamic Navigation, Dynamic Voice Recognition and Toyota Connected Services.
TRD Off-Road Weather Package including Heated Leather-Trimmed Steering Wheel, Perforated Heated and Ventilated Front Bucket Seats and Rain Sensing Intermittent Wipers w/De-icer function.
TRD Off-Road Technology Package featuring Front and Rear Parking Assist w/Braking, Digital Rear View Mirror and Qi Wireless Smartphone Charging.
OF NOTE: The technology package also added the – really important for off-roading – Bird’s Eye View Camera w/Perimeter Scan and Overhead 360-degree View w/Curb View in low speed and reverse. When traversing those more complex trails or rock climbs, this is a feature you will want.
Other options included the two-tone paint, Paint Protection Film and Roof Rack Cross Bars.
With delivery, our 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road was in the garage for $42,095.
The RAV4 for 2020 comes in both hybrid and gasoline versions.
RAV4 Hybrid starts at MSRP $28,350 for the LE trim level. There are four trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE and Limited. All are AWD only.
The gasoline RAV4 comes in the same four trim levels with FWD and AWD available in all. Additionally, they offer an Adventure Grade and the TRD Off-Road for those who want more than just a great every day SUV.
