The Volvo XC60 has been a significant part of the Volvo line for several years. Available with gas and Plug-in-Hybrid (Recharge) powertrains, the consumer has become a favorite for consumers in search of value and performance in a mid-size SUV.

For 2024, Volvo added a new variant – the Black Edition – to its XC60 Recharge (Hybrid) line.  Based on the Top-of-the-Line Ultimate, the Black Edition enables discriminating Volvo discriminating buyers to make a bold styling statement as well.

Volvo loaned us a 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge AWD Ultimate Black Edition recently for a weeklong test drive in and around Austin, Texas.

The MSRP for the Recharge Black Edition is $68,950. Adding a Climate Package of Headlamp Cleaners and Heated Rear Seats, Power Tailgate, Active Air Suspension Chassis, Massaging Front Seats, Bowers and Wilkins Premium Audio and Destination – our Black Edition arrived at our garage with a $76,695 price tag.

Let’s take a look starting with the hybrid powertrain.

The 2024 XC60 AWD Recharge Plug-in Hybrid system is comprised of a specially modified (turbo and supercharged) version of Volvo’s 4-cylinder 2.0L Drive gasoline engine and an electric motor. The gasoline engine delivers 312 horsepower to the front while the 143-horsepower electric motor drives the rear wheels.

Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a ‘B-Mode’ manual shift option, the combined hybrid unit delivers 455 horsepower with 523 lb.-ft. of torque.  The XC60 is quick with acceleration 0-60 mph at 4.5 seconds and top speed of 113 mph.

Fuel economy ratings for this powertrain are 28 mpg Combined City/Highway gasoline with 63 MPGe hybrid combined.  Gas only range is 420 miles, Electric only 35 miles and combined hybrid 560 miles.

NOTE: The XC60 it tows too – when properly equipped – up to 3,500 pounds.

Since you probably asked about charging, the XC60 comes standard with the 120V power cord for charging from regular household plugs.  But it is slow taking more than 8 hours to recharge. We recommend installing a 240V charging system at your home.  It will recharge the XC60 in just over 5 hours.

NOTE: This hybrid is capable of ‘one pedal’ driving for both acceleration and deceleration (battery recharging).  It uses a ‘brake by wire’ technology that enables battery recharging whenever you back off the throttle – no need to go to the brake pedal.

Drive Modes

The default powertrain mode for the XC60 AWD Recharge is Hybrid. In this mode, both the electric motor and gas engine are utilized individually or in parallel. Their operation is optimized with regard to performance, fuel-consumption and comfort. The engine and     automatic gearbox are programmed for maximum comfort.

Depending on driver preference or operating environment considerations, there are four modes a driver can select to optimize the hybrid powertrain performance.  They are:

  • Pure mode prioritizes electric operation and low energy-consumption. The engine, gearbox and climate system are set to Eco mode. Dynamic vehicle performance is reduced and the air-conditioning unit is partly disengaged. This mode is active at speeds up to 78 mph.
  • Power mode has the gas engine and the electric motor are working in parallel to ensure the strongest    performance and quick response. The Adaptive Digital Display is set to Sport mode and the steering and braking system is set to Dynamic mode.  In this setting, both the front and rear wheels are continuously driven.
  • AWD (All Wheel Drive) addstraction in slippery conditions. The powertrain distributes power from the gas engine to the front wheels and power from the electric motor to the rear wheels for optimal performance.
  • Off Road is used at speeds below 12 mph to maximize the SUV’s performance on poor roads.  Power distribution between the front and rear wheels is locked at 50/50.  The engine and gearbox are optimized for traction and the Electronic Stability Control system is set to Traction/Sport with the Hill Descent Control is automatically activated when driving down hills.

Our 2024 Volvo XC60 AWD Recharge was equipped with the Active Chassis Air Suspension with Automatic Leveling, High-Speed Height Adjustment and Easy Ingress/Egress mode-lowering for entry and exit.

Basic suspension and running gear on our XC60 Recharge included Double Wishbone (front) and Integral Link (rear) set ups; the 21-inch 5 Double Spoke Black Diamond Cut alloy wheels, Electric Power Assisted Steering and Power ABS Brakes with ventilated discs front and rear.

In every Drive Mode and road situation, our XC60 Recharge Black Edition drove and rode exceptionally well – as expected, very typical of Volvo design and engineering.

Our XC60 AWD Recharge Black Edition sported the traditional iconic Volvo exterior – crisp and ruggedly simple -highlighted by its “Thor’s Hammer” LED lighting front and rear.

Notably – as the Black Edition name suggests – our XC60 was all Black (Onyx Black Metallic) featuring a Black Iron Mark Front Grille, Black Wheels, Black Bumpers front and rear, Black Door Handles, Black Window Trims and Black Badging front and rear. Black, Black and more Black.

Standard functional features included First and Second Row Power Sunroof with Power Sunshade, Power Rear Lift Gate, Power Folding Mirrors, Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers, Roof Racks, Adaptive Auto-Leveling LED Headlamps, Front and Rear Fog Lamps.

Down right good looking from every angle in the Metallic Black.  So much so that our City Constable offered to swap his all-black (brand name redacted) pursuit SUV for our XC60.

The Black Edition theme carried into the cabin of our XC60 Recharge as well. As expected, it was well-tailored in Scandinavian minimalist luxury and simplicity of function.

You may or may not notice the absence of buttons, switches and knobs in the design as your eyes will immediately gravitate to the awesome illuminated Orrefors Crystal Gearshift at the center of the console. As often as we have driven Volvos so equipped, we find our eyes fixate on the shifter almost before anything else.

Complimenting the luxury of the shifter and the simplicity of design is the use of premium multi textured materials including metal mesh as accents in the tailored dashboard and upper door panels.

Comfort is assured with the Charcoal Nappa Leather 10-way Power Front Seats w/Massage that are heated and ventilated with Power Cushion Extensions, the Dual-Zone Climate Control w/Advanced Air Cleaner and High-Level Ambient Illumination among other features.

The highlight of our XC60 AWD Recharge Black Edition infotainment was the Bowers and Wilkins 1,410W Premium Audio System with 15 separate hi-fi speakers including their iconic Tweeter-on-Top center speaker. Of particular note were the four ‘Room Modes” to select from that recreate the acoustics of a specific performance venue type to support the audio choices.

Among the key elements were the 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display, Tablet style center console display, Google Built-in w/Google Play Store, Maps and Google Assistant, four USB-C Ports, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth Connectivity, Over-the-Air updating, Google Hotspot, Proximity Keys and Pushbutton Start and more.

The 2024 Volvo XC60 AWD Recharge has been awarded a Top Safety Pick crash safety rating  from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).

In addition to being top-rated crash safety vehicle, some of the driver assistance features worth mentioning are:  Driver Monitoring Alert, 360 Surround View Camera; Head-Up Display with Road Sign Recognition, Back-up Camera, Front Camera, Left and Right-Side Cameras, Front and Rear Parking Assist; Automatic LED headlights and DRL; Blind Spot Information w/Steer Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Braking

Other key elements include Pilot Assistance Semi-Autonomous Driving System w/Adaptive Cruise Control; City Safety Collision Avoidance w/Low and High Speed Collision Mitigation plus Pedestrian, Cycle and Animal alert; Run-off Road Protection and Oncoming Mitigation w/Lane Departure and Lane Keeping; Oncoming Braking Mitigation and more.
